LOL@ 2011. I was convinced Ryan Mallett was going to be an NFL QB was disappointed when the Hawks didn't grab him.

After the top few years, that list is pretty ugly. Lucky if one guy came out here or there.

Dude, i was watching it on my phone and could not believe they didn't get Mallet haha. Didn't we draft a guard? Who ended up not being very good? I'll look it up lol. I was totally in the same boat as you for sure.

Oh wow.. Ryan Mallet died in 2023 from a drowning accident. I don't remember seeing anything about that? Anyway we took James carpenter with our first pick that year. RIP Ryan Mallett

There were a few drafts that I was highly disappointing

1998- I wanted Randy Moss Hawks ended up with Anthony Simmons who had a decent career but not a HOF WR who turned into the NFLs best deep threat ever

2003- when the Ravens drafted Terrell Suggs @10, Hawks took Marcus Trufant @ 11. Suggs was my big target he was such a beast at ASU

as far as QBs go

1999
1 Tim Couch
2. Donavon McNabb
3.Akili Smith

McNabb had a nice career but Couch and Smith were aweful

2003
1. David Carr
3. Joey Harrington

just to name a few QBs that were god aweful

Yes, many awful QBs were drafted early. They still hit at a much, much higher percentage in the first round than any other part of the draft.

Unfortunately, there's not really a method that eliminates risk. You need great scouting, even better coaching, and some good luck.

Until Russell Wilson was drafted in 2012, that was a 36-year span where the best QB in franchise history was Matt Hasselbeck. Hass was awesome, all respect in the world to him, but there are a good number of franchises where he wouldnt even be one of their five best.
