Kam had injury similar to Harvin's last season?

News to me. I know he had surgery right after the season ended on his "lower leg".

Had no idea he played with a hip problem also.

Carroll said safety Kam Chancellor played with a similar hip issue last season.

“Kam Chancellor made it through, and he’s OK,” Carroll said. “So we know that there’s a chance that it could be all right. So we just have to keep our fingers crossed. We’re pretty optimistically minded around here. And we’ll try to take as much time as we need to make a really good decision to take care of (Harvin) in the best way possible.”

Shows you how tough Kam is (probably also how badly he wanted that second contract)

I never knew this. Some guys keep injuries quiet. It's a good thing, because then they don't leave an excuse out there. Kam had a few plays where he could have said "My hip was bothering me" and never did. He took the field, and he did his best. Can't fault a guy for that. I will say though, that it bothers me when a player is injured and doesn't sit down if a suitable replacement is available. Lying to the coach is not cool. I've seen it happen to too many pitchers in the M's system because that was the ingrained attitude under Lou... pitch til your arm falls off or you won't get a chance at the top. So we lost about 5 future top flight guys to arms blowing up.

I thought it was something in his heel?

It was bone spurs for Kam (both ankles). http://www.kffl.com/gnews.php?id=849823 ... -surgeries

As far as I know, Kam never had surgery for a labrum tear.

I guess the point Pete could make is that the effect is similar, Kam was slowed but still played.

I wonder, (in the potential case of Kam having it), is it possible for a labrum to heal naturally without surgery if given time and rest?

I tore my labrum in both shoulders playing baseball and it healed with rest. At least it healed enough to keep throwing. I also damaged my labrum in my hip and had a steroid injection into the labrum, and way down deep in the joint. I had the procedure repeated. I was allowed to go into full activity (including any and all sports) a week after each injection. They seemed to help. A lot of it was just a nagging kind of toothache pain and a bit of trouble pushing off when running (which would cause problems as I'd load up weight on the opposite leg and then get injured in the lower back, right ankle, etc.). But the injections worked. The doc told me that they only worry about the tear if there is a big chance of it progressing. I guess that's the situation with Harvin, and the injections weaken tissue and could lead to a full rupture which is not the desired outcome.

I remember reading after the season, Kam mentioning something about his hip.

It matters on the severity of the tear. My brother tore his playing softball and needed surgery, and wasn't back to normal for 5-6 months.

In a way this is good. Some of us thought Kam slipped a bit last year; he was either out of position, or just not quite there to make the play like he did 2 years ago, which could be attributed to diagnosing the play late and getting over 2 steps too late.

It would make sense if he was hobbled by more injuries than we thought. A guy that big can run downhill (straight) easier than laterally and changing directions. If your hip is messed up, and your ankles hurt, that makes it even harder. Now that he's healthy, and paid, we an probably expect to see the Kam of 2 years ago; big hits and INT's and making more plays.

The bone spurs are what we KNEW Kam had, and what he had surgery for.

What Pete says in this article and what he said in an interview recently is that Kam ALSO had a similar issue as Harvin in his hip last season, which means Kam played through both the bone spurs and the hip issue without revealing it.

This explains more than anything Kam's less than stellar (although still good) 2012 season, I think.

I'm pretty sure that they are not obligated to report any injuries that do not keep a player out of practice/games. Otherwise they'd be reporting every hang nail and bruised arm. So, it is easy for me to believe that Kam may have had an unreported injury.
