And there's a great "letter to the editor" concerning the Richard Sherman article: "Sherman wrote, "I'm not sure what else i can do to prove that I'm the top corner in the game, but once you're branded as a fifth round pick, that sticks." I wonder if sixth round pick Tom Brady and his three Super Bowl rings have an opinion on what else Richard Sherman can do."

I thought that was an awesome comment :th2thumbs:

Another cool one by Terry E. Lumsden, Tacoma, WA, . "It's a sign of the Apocalypse that Richard Sherman is on the cover and not Phil Mickelson."

Yeah when I read that I actually thought it was a slam on Richard....as in Sherm still hasnt accomplished much in comparison to big Tom.

I read it differently. More like "if Tom can do that imagine what Richard can do."

You could be right! Probably depends on if the author of the comment is a Pats fan....or a hawk 8)

I don't get why he is so obsessed with his image or perceived lot in the pecking order... Who cares! Just shut up and play, Richard! The rest will take care of itself... it's freakin' annoying!

It is obviously how he motivates himself.

He'd probably be just as annoyed at fans that don't get it as you are at him.

Maybe.... on the other hand he could "save face" (ask Trent Williams), if he could just humble himself a bit.... but whatever, as long as he brings it on Sundays.... it just comes off as petulant to me.

Sherman has people talking about Seattle. It hasn't always been pretty, but it's getting the job done.

I have heard over and over again how Tom Brady uses his draft status as a way to motivate himself and plays with a chip on his shoulder. It is often stated on ESPN radio etc and is viewed as a positive.

Not sure why it wouldn't be positive because Sherman says it

I don't give a rip about annoying. I care about play on the field and what you do as a human. Drive over someone as Donte Stallworth, beat your wife like Jason Kidd - I care. You talk a lot - I don't care

Not trying to sound like an a**, but what is with the fascination about how much someone talks, when they are bringing it on the field, every game?? It just gets ran into the ground over and over and over.
He's a quality guy, and one hell of a football player, nothing else matters.
Talk away Sherm. Gary Payton had a hall of fame career and never stopped talking the entire time. Geezus, it's part of the game. They've already taken enough of the fun out of the game. Have fun, and dominate like you do Sherm.

I don't think it's a slam on Richard. He's just saying that if Sherman wants to be considered one of the game's best, then winning a Super Bowl is the way to do it.

Different personalities motivate themselves in different ways. If Sherman actually did "shut up", I bet his play would suffer massively.

Exactly. It works for HIM, so I can't see the problem. There are way too many positive things about this team. Worrying about how much someone talks?? What is it hurting? nothing

It's motivation...what professional athlete doesn't use something to get them fired up? Jerry Rice, Michael Jordan, Russell Wilson...it's what the greats do

Exactly. You hear stories that Jordan would even make something up to convince himself that someone is calling him out etc. I guess I just think it's cool when someone is willing to talk the talk, and actually backs it up. That takes guts.

This is a great strategy in life too. If you say something aloud or declare a goal to someone else, then all of a sudden you are accountable for delivering on it. I do this for little things all the time. Just telling my wife in the morning, "I'm going to go to the gym today" -- I'll know that when I get back home from work she'll ask, "Did you go to the gym" -- and that question will make me more motivated to deliver on my promise, even though it doesn't really matter to her. Seriously, it's a good method. I imagine Sherman telling everyone "he's the best" forces him to get his butt in gear and work harder in order to prove it.

Very good point. I lost 75 pounds and have kept it off. I constantly tell myself I'm going to go do a long walk, etc. and most of the time stick to it. Whatever it takes to keep the motivation going.

I read it differently. More like "if Tom can do that imagine what Richard can do."

I read it for the positive as well. If I'd written the op ed myself, I'd have chosen the words " Richard is capable of" rather than "Richard can do" to make it clear it was a supportive statement rather than a slam, but I realize I'm also doing some 'Monday morning quarterbacking' by saying that. :common069:

In either case, I feel a few warm fuzzies with the continued attention to our 'Hawks on the national level.
