The amount of injuries this season is higher than in previous years. I kind of got the feeling that I was seeing more guys getting hurt through training camps and pre-season but I figured that it was just me. Around the start of the year Stefania Bell tweeted some figures that clarified the situation. Injuries are actually up this season. That got me thinking. I wondered whether all these knee injuries were common historically. I took a look back through the books and found that they are indeed common but not as common as they are now; strange considering that the NFL has made it mandatory for players to wear knee braces now.

Anyway, I saw a lot of nasty clips while I was checking the figures and I decided to write an article. In the article I listed some of the major ones that I found, sure there are some really huge ones that I missed, but I wanted video footage of the plays and they're quite hard to get hold of. If you want to read the article you can find it here,

I'd love to know what you guys think of the amount of injuries that have happened so far this year. Do you guys get the feeling that they're up on previous years?

Pads. The players are required to wear knee pads, not braces.

I don't think the amount of injuries is up at all, I think that the difference this year is the players getting injured are players that everyone knows. Big names get the press and we never hear of injuries of guys that nobody knows.

T.J. McDonald looks to have fractured his leg in last night's game. Jake Long got rolled up on too, but he went back into the game.

Oh, and yeah, knee pads. My bad.

Knee injuries are going to increase because players are hitting lower

This is very true dude. Some of the hits look dangerous. Do you think we'll see a day where defenders have a strike zone similar to that in baseball?

I'm wondering how much of it has to do with an increase in amount of teams with field turf as opposed to real grass. I think that the increased player speed that is likely on the turf increases injury potential in general.

Well, a lot of these knee and ankle injuries appear to be a result of cleats sticking. As for the turf, the old school turf was way worse.
