Lions land Za'Darius Smith before NFL trade deadline

I'm just saying, if we sneak in as the 7th seed, and we're staring down a top 3 of DET, ATL, and Wash... I think we can make the Super Bowl. Bookmark it.

Thoughts on PFF's grading of our OL players

PFF definitely graded the left side higher than expect, but the right is still a dumpster fire. Jerrell's grade is below replacement level, and Bradford is at replacement level.

    Geno wasn’t good this game

2017 is good case study for traditional metrics vs. advanced. It's technically Wilson's second worst season (with Seattle) from an efficiency stand point: 61% cmp, 44 SR. Wilson's rushing ability also took some of the pressure off him in the passing game. So it's hard to compare his situation...

Lions land Za'Darius Smith before NFL trade deadline

The Lions are weirdly the rare Superbowl contender that I think we can beat in the playoffs.

    2023 vs 2024 defensive DVOA

Since week 3, they are 30th in EPA/play and 32nd in success rate. That includes the Rams game. It's a relatively small sample (6 games), but a 5% increase in SR is significant. It's the difference between the league's #1 offense and the 14th-ranked offense. 15 sounds about right. My gut...

    Getting harder to argue against.

The issue up front is clearly John's philosophy. He's not willing to pay market prices for starting linemen. He's always looking for that marginal value in free agency and the draft: the guy coming off an injury, the aging veteran on the decline, the mid-round pick, etc. Until Leonard Williams...

    2023 vs 2024 defensive DVOA

This is actually very easy to explain. Dominant early performances are still affecting DVOA. I don't have access to the full DVOA menu. But if you look at other metrics after week three, it shows the defense performing significantly worse than last season—nearly double the EPA/play and a 5%...

    NET Temp On Mike

Mike has been okay. He's still raw around the edges, but that's not unexpected. I like what he's done with the defense. I'll hold off judgment of him as an HC until the season plays out. My biggest complaint is the team's overall lack of an identity. I mean, when you look at the Seahawks, what...

    Supporting the Quarterback.

Yeah. I agree with him. He's making the same arguments nerds have been making about Geno for 3 years. Unfortunately, many people in our fanbase don't care about numbers. They want to see results on the field. And Geno is the easiest person to blame for what is happening on offense. The...

A different take - The optimism thread

This argument doesn't make any economic sense. The average salary for a starting NFL quarterback who is not on a rookie contract is $45m/year. Geno at $20m/year would be an absolute steal. On paper, anything under $35m/year would also be a steal. And sure, you could kick the tires on the...

Young Gun trend may be ending

I don't think this is the end of hiring young head coaches. Owners want to find the next Tomlin or McVay, someone they can plug in for two decades with consistent results. What's most interesting is those guys rarely come from perennial contenders. The Belichick, Reid, Carroll, and Harbaugh...

Potential candidates before the trade deadline

Seattle should trade for a rental lineman. The front office needs to find out what they have in this offense, and right now, they don't have the guys up front to execute.

    Arthur Smith

To be fair, Seattle has a significantly better QB.

Was Grubb a Schneider or a Macdonald hire?

The O-line also hinders Grubb, but he doesn't game plan enough to minimize it. Where Pete's teams over-compensated to protect inexperienced linemen, Grubb has taken it to the opposite extreme. It took him six sacks to start bringing in extra guys in pass protection.

    Geno wasn’t good this game

That's fair. Personally, I think Baker is a fairly limited quarterback whose skill set relies heavily on his supporting cast. For example, he was good in Cleveland when he had an elite O-line and rushing attack, and we're seeing that again in Tampa. However, he was a trainwreck when those things...

A different take - The optimism thread

That's not even true. Seattle ran the ball four straight times in their final drive of overtime after Geno put them in the red zone on a 30-yard pass to JSN. In reality, they took the ball out of his hands at the end of the game and came up short.

    Geno wasn’t good this game

Fun fact: Geno's PFF grade against the Rams is HIGHER than Mayfield's season grade.

    Geno wasn’t good this game

If you read the thread, you'll notice I don't view either RZ turnover as a bad decision by Geno. I'll have to double-check, but I believe PFF only credited him with one TWP in the game, which is probably why he graded out above average despite having three INTs.
  19. K

    Geno wasn’t good this game

This. Geno had the 5th lowest TWP% heading into the Rams game. The notion that he's turnover-prone is entirely volume-related. He leads the league in INTs because he throws the ball more than anyone. For perspective, Geno has 43% more passing attempts than the NFL average, or in concrete...

    Geno wasn’t good this game

We don't know Geno's ceiling. He's played behind a bottom-five O-line in three straight seasons. Sure. He can't carry a team with the 30th-ranked rush offense and the 27th-ranked pass protection, but how many QBs can?
