I can't see this happening. He has regressed some, but is still excellent, and they need to maximize their increasingly-narrowing window where McCaffrey, Boss, and Warner are still good.

With all the money kicked down the road they're not going to fix it anytime soon unless they go full on re load
Can't have that many aging pieces and compete when they can't draft and or hit on FAs so eff em

It's interesting hearing beat 49ers reporters like Grant Cohn saying they should blow up the offensive side and rebuild given its old and expensive outside of Purdy and Pearsall. While others like Dave Lombardi basically saying all is well and the 49ers were just banged up last year and only need a few pieces. They were banged up because they are old and had a lot of wear and tear...

Please.

49ers aren't releasing Trent. LOL.

This is a ploy by his agent. He has a bonus due 9 days after the start of Free Agency so a decision will be made by then.

If they cut him, they only save 4 mil on the cap.

They won't do that.

Spot the BS guys. Schefter carrying water for Trents agent to get another deal.

That isn't a fair account of the situation. The 49ers will have to account for $34,106,669 of dead money over the next 2 seasons regardless of what they decide to do with Williams. If they keep Williams or cut him with a post June 1st designation they'll account for $13,281,665 of dead money in 2026 and the remaining $20,825,004 in 2027. If they cut him without the designation they have to account for all of it in 2026.

The 49ers decision is purely about Williams pay for 2026. Williams is due $33.06M. If they think he's worth close to that figure and they're desperate not to lose him then they'll retain him with the overpay. If they think he's worth closer to $25M they'll cut him before the $10M roster bonus guarantees and then compete for his signature with him as a FA.

If Williams is going to accept a significant pay cut he'd like the opportunity to talk terms with other teams before he makes a decision. However, cutting Williams with or without a post June 1st designation would mean the 49ers have a lot less 2026 cap space with which to re-sign him. Letting Williams talk to other teams before the 49ers make a final cut/keep decision makes the most sense.

M'Kay.

Trent isn't going anywhere.

As I said before...this was a leak by Trents agent to spur action for a favorable extension.

-180 he stays, +160 he leaves. If the 49ers were happy to keep him at $33.06M there would be nothing to leak. Williams has a history of holding back if he's not happy with his contract. He's not the sort of guy who gives much of a home town discount. If the 49ers let him talk to other teams to figure out his FA value, (with a view to them matching it), then he'd probably be -400 to stay. If the 49ers play hardball he'd probably be -300 to leave. If another team offers him $28M whilst the 49ers say their top offer is $26M I think he'll leave. Williams is a bottom line guy....and San Francisco is a high taxation location.

Just over 24 hours left before the 49ers make their decision. If there was going to be a new contract I would have expected it to be announced by now, and I don't see another team trading for Williams. I'm thinking he's more likely to be cut than retained. We'll see.

And then watch the Rams come out the nether to swoop him up and then get both AJ Brown and Jalen Carter from the Eagles for only 2 first round picks (#14, ‘27 1st Rounder) plus WR Jordan Whittigan, TE Colby Parkinson, and DT Braden Fiske.

Cutting him doesn't help them. They just want to bring his cap number down but the savings if they cut him is minimal.

Either they work something out or they pay him the bonus and leave his contract as is.

They'll probably work something out, I doubt Williams will want to move.

Doubt he doesn't play this season.
