I don't know what I'm feeling about this ? Maybe we got hustled by an aging DT.
Considering what Madubuike signed for, Williams market was probably going to be in the range of $20m per. Seahawks likely didn’t want him to reach the market, they probably offered him something similar to what they gave Dre’Mont but Big Cat’s agent probably did the smart thing, considering that this was probably Williams last chance for a big pay day, and made the Seahawks match what other teams were willing to give him. With the Seahawks also giving up a 2nd round pick for you why not try to leverage for more. That’s business.

This guy was an immediate game changer. 3 years (with like @kidhawk said probably some easy out before the 3rd) is a perfect contract for his age. I like.
5-2 before we signed him. 4-6 after we signed him. Run defense was 32nd over those 10 games. He played well, but not at a top-10 level. I never saw him dominate a game. I've seen every other top-10 IDL dominate games.

I see the potential. The defensive schemes last year sucked. I'm hoping that's why he wasn't all that. With new coaching he has the potential to become an actual top-10 and earn his paycheck. I'm looking forward to actually seeing it.

MM must have confidence of his scheme fit and potential effectiveness or he wouldn't have been given top pay.

Well, I knew that Ifedi, Carpenter and Collier sucked right when they were drafted. So...... Get a clue Scutterhawk dumb dumb 🤣
That does not exactly qualify as ascendant knowledge.

This is a good signing. Money should go to important places like the DL.

I don't think so... not in this case.

An average of $21.5M/year puts him at #9 in the league, between Daron Payne and DeForest Buckner.
It's not an overpay. It is a great deal. Some fans talk about contracts like they have to look at their own paychecks to decide.

So much for all the posters claiming over and over of what a mistake it was to give up a second round pick for a half year rental.

The half-year rental made no difference.

I was in favor of the trade when it happened, but only because I thought getting Williams could make a big difference for the '23 Seahawks. If the Seahawks hadn't made the trade, they still would have been able to sign Williams now as a free agent whose contract with the Giants had just expired.

So I disagree with those who say it was a mistake to give up a second-round pick for a half-year rental, but not because Williams just agreed to a free-agent deal with the Seahawks.

A bit high, but he is a very good player that can play all over the line.
I get it.

I really don't see how this is a relevant point in a league with a firm salary cap. NFL fans only worry about overpaid contracts because it means there is less to spend on other players.

Free agents are usually overpaid due to the Winner's Curse. Players on rookie contracts are usually underpaid due to the artificially low structured values. Combine those two factors, and trading draft capital away for the opportunity to sign a UFA is nearly always poor roster building strategy.

The benefit of the Leonard Williams trade, and why we gave up the 2nd, was having an elite defensive player at an area of need for half of last year at a huge discount. If we had won the Super Bowl then most people would have been OK with it, but it's tough to justify now given we didn't even make the playoffs.

Looking at DT free agents the Raiders signed Wilkins to a 4 year deal with $110 million. Wilkins is only a year younger and although I’d rank him higher than Williams I’d say that Williams is probably the next best DT in this years free agent class. To get him for what we did seems like we got a bargain. Do we get that bargain if he weren’t a Seahawk last year? Hard to say, but it has the feel of a small hometown discount. Add that to the fact that the Giants also paid almost all his salary last season, which imo makes this an overall good deal by John.

Good points. I highly doubt he signs for that if he wasn't with the team for part of last season. IF he didn't want to be here, he wouldn't. And he probably could have grabbed a bigger contract with another team. He CHOSE to stay.

Yeah, Williams, is originally from the West Coast, so he doesn’t want to far again, from what I’ve observed from interviews etc
