Sol why did he look so blah at Michigan?
Well for one Michigan is so run focused and doesn't ask much from their QB, plus JJ was hurt for part of the season.

getnasty linked a nice YouTube video on page 3 that showed some of JJ's best throws and scrambles for the 2023 season, that's worth a watch.

Florida and loving GOP country!
I'm no expert, but watching the highlights on page 3, the only thing I can see is that he has a long wind up. Would I be correct in this observation? Other than what I saw with his release, it looks like he can make all of the throws that he needs to and can scramble and run. I like him.

Seriously now ..
If we did take JJ .. I'd love to be proven wrong and I would
eat crow.
I like his mobility and he is a winner against big schools.
I just don't know if he's for the next level but you could have
said the same about Purdy and whoever saw that coming?

This isn't the point. Successful college quarterbacks often turn into unsuccessful NFL quarterbacks. Mechanics and traits are a big reason for that.
Well like I stated earlier I ain't no NFL coach. I also haven't heard or read that any of the NFL talking heads are nervous of JJ's mechanics. He also improved from '22 66% to '23 72% completion percentage. So yes again he must have to wind it up pretty damn accurately. For a young man with an awesome attitude and leadership, and his college record, I would take him over Anthony Richardson any day of the week, and twice on Sunday!

The more you try to sell him, the more I hope he doesn't end in Seattle.
Dieing to hear why you dislike tough, accurate, winning QB's, that can extend plays with his arm & legs? You have to be real, if your hoping for Penix, I don't want nothing to do with him. Helluva a arm & accurate, but the dude is fragile, and I don't see him ever playing a full NFL season, and tell me the last time a backup won a SB, besides Nick Foles. If we don't move up for one of the top 3 QB's, then JJ is my favorite.

You have a reference link to back up that 4.4 - 4.5 claim for JJ's speed? I saw 4.6, which is good enough, IIRC, Mahomes was listed at 4.7 but he sure seems fast enough to outrun and elude a lot of defenders.

Jim Harbaugh sure sings JJ's praises. Matt Ryan lists JJ as his #5 QB for the upcoming draft.

I'm warming up to the idea of the Seahawks taking McCarthy, even in round 1, because he seems like a winner who will do the work to be great. Kind of like a round 1 Brock Purdy with more physical talent. Just please, no 2nd coming of Rick Mirer.

Matt Ryan expressed mild reservations about JJ's elongated throwing motion in a video I saw. But still rated JJ in his top 5 QBs in this draft.

Don't see any need to dog Anthony Richardson in the process. By all accounts Richardson has the leadership and other qualities needed in an NFL QB. Just not bulletproof and got injured. I think he'll be great for Indy. We'll see...

Not trying to sell him just mildly surprised at how many posters judge a potential prospect based on very little to no data instead of reading at least one pertinent article before rushing to judgment.

Tangibles are important but something that's equally important and more elusive to quantify is mental fortitude.

A prime example of a player that had all the tangible traits but lacked the mental component is Ryan Leaf.

McCarthy has both tangibles and intangibles. Whether he ends up here or elsewhere this will become apparent soon.

Thank you! Somehow didn't see the earlier link on my computer (colors issue)

The 4.4 to 4.5 was a McCarthy self-report, according to the article, and they list 4.6 as his "official" time.
Anyway, 4.6 is plenty good to run away from most DTs and LBs and most Edges not named Micah Parsons. McCarthy was plenty fast to run away from the UW pass rush in the FCS title game for 30 yards when he decided to take off. If his NFL combine time is 4.50 or better, I'll buy you a virtual beer, if it's 4.45 or better, make it a six-pack. 4.6 or slower, you owe me the same. 4.56 to 4.59 = push. Or simpler, I'll switch avatar to UM-JJ glorifying one for two weeks, or you to a UW Husky/Penix one for same.

Yeah time will tell. See if he learned his lesson? I question his leadership skills, and doesn't show me he can read a defense fast enough to be a stand in the pocket QB? He just relies on his legs to much, he is just like Geno IMHO he can only process half the field, so that also greatly limits your offense.

You mean like a bunch of people acting like Penix sucks after one bad game vs. Michigan?

He was possibly the best QB in the college football, one bad game and people are acting like he he's a 3rd rounder.

My concerns over Penix have nothing to do with his abilities and everything to do with his durability. 2 ACL tears and 2 shoulder injuries in the span of 4 years is a little concerning. He has been mostly healthy since so it may just be bad luck/timing.

As a Michigan fan I've seen Penix play for a number of years while at Indiana. His passing has become even more dynamic but he doesn't seem to have the mobility he once displayed with regularity. Two ACL surgeries can do that. Unfortunate since the constant threat of his legs made him even more dangerous.

Agree to disagree, he can do it all.
I have a feeling Penix will be nothing more then Geno. Penix has a better arm. I just see Penix as being fragile, and that alone makes me not want Penix. How many starting QB's finished the season? How many backups are in the playoffs, besides your buddy Flacco j/k lol, and he only made it with the best D in football? You must have a tough QB, Stafford, Allen, Mahomes type for instance.
