So who here thinks it was a mistake to not get Mayfield? I think this a huge win for the future of this team. Think beyond this year imo..and really does Mayfield provide anymore than a couple wins over Lock and Geno? There is a reason why Cleveland completely risked destroying their franchise to move on from him...

Not me!

The team is long term better off drafting a good young player and developing that player while strengthening other position groups on the team with the cap saved at QB.

Capwise as the cap increases the team will be able to find a way to pay that good young QB if he is truly worth keeping.

Assuming that ship has sailed, it would have been bad IMO.

Not fussed about Mayfield, or any specific alternative, but I think it's a mistake to go with Lock/Smith.

Maybe not Mayfield in particular (although I do like him), but I think we may regret not making a serious push at another guy. I would have been happy with Mitchell Trubisky or Desmond Ridder.

Doubt I'll get much agreement on this, but I'd throw the Packers a conditional mid-rounder and see if we can pry Jordan Love away. Best case scenario, either he or Lock shows they can be the guy going forward (Geno might as well not be on the team as far as I'm concerned). If not, we're not out much of anything. Pretty low-risk.

Mayfield would have been an upgrade but not as much as people think. Mayfield played with much more talented teams and was pretty ordinary for most of his career.

It is a good move for Carolina because Mayfield is a huge upgrade compared to Darnold. Darnold sunk his stock so much that I do not think he is that much better than many third string QBs in the NFL at the moment...

Looks like the decision has been made with the QB room . If we win 5 or 6 . Gr8 . I'm going to relax this season . Fan since 1976 . Seen all this before . )

Happy to bump this up in the middle of the season a few times when Baker uses that chip on his shoulder and kicks some ass while Lock/Geno lead us to 3-4 wins. If you WANT to lose next year everything is looking up for you. I want the team to win.

We'll see. "chips on shoulders" are a funny thing tho. What about Geno and Drew's shoulder chips?

It's all about building a new culture. Baker is a likely malcontent and his version of competitiveness quickly turns pouty. This year is going to be about setting up a hungry team that has chemistry - Baker probably isn't the best dude for that.

You know who was the best dude for that? Tarvaris Jackson. You know who the best dude for that is now? Geno. He has the respect of the locker room, just like TJack did. If Lock beats him, fair game, gotta be consistent and give the winner of the competition the job. That's gonna set this team up for more wins and a better future than the maybe 1-2 extra wins Mayfield gets you.

I think people are stuck in the mentality of having a team that could be a single (attainable) player away from contention. Sure, they could blow their wad and sell out, try to go all Eagles Dream Team on everyone, but that doesn't work long-term. You're not building anything that way. There's a different dynamic now.

I think it will be a mistake in the end. Seattle was very interested but simply not willing to take on the same amount of Salary that Carolina was. We should have done it.
