The safety agreed to a four-year, $84.1 million deal with the Bucs on Monday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. Tampa Bay later announced the contract.

The deal includes $45 million in guaranteed money and makes him the highest-paid defensive back in the NFL, marking the first time in league history that such a title belongs to a safety.

What were they thinking?
Safeties are becoming the RB on the pay scale I thought.

For that defensive system a safety has to play free, strong and nickel. So Winfield can do all three and he is a cornerstone of how Bowles runs his defensive system. They drafted T. Smith who is similar to Winfield and they re-signed Whitehead.

I think the Bucs overpaid for Winfield but in a few years it will be considered a bargain.
