As I said before still gettin to grips with the sport. I know the clock only runs when the ball is in play but whilst playing madden I noticed that the clock runs down in the last 2mins. But not all the time :?
Anyone care to clarify this for the newcomer cheers.

If the ball falls incomplete or a player runs out of bounds the clock is stopped

And then the clock is started again once the official spots the ball.

The clock stops on an incomplete pass or when a player with the ball runs out of bounds. And then it starts again when the official spots the ball, except during the last two minutes of the first half and the last five minutes of the second half.

All you need to know about clock management is this, if we beat the Giants by 24 points, then we have "cleaned their clock."

New noob query of the day. Watching the bengals/steelers game. 1st quarter after steelers td they kick the ball. Bengals player Tate is getti ready to catch but sherman catches instead. Makes a good run coverin several yards but gets penalized and the bengals hav to take their 1st down way back wer tate was. Think it was called fair play? Seems bit crap for a rule

Not sure who Sherman on the Bengals is, but what I think you're referring to is a "fair catch"? From my understanding of what happened from what you're saying is, Steelers kicked the ball off, during this time, the kick returner can either catch the ball and run, let it hit the ground, or signal for a "fair catch". A fair catch is signaled when the kick returner waves both hands in the air, this means that the kick returner has the ability to catch the ball with out interference(kicking team can't tackle the kick returner when he catches it or recover the ball unless someone on the returning team touches it first) and then the ball becomes downed at the spot where he catches it.

So during that play, I think what happened was Tate signaled for a fair catch, but someone else on his team got the ball and started running with it? By rule since Tate signaled for a fair catch, the ball is downed where ever it is caught. The other player that caught it (Sherman?) probably didn't know Tate signaled for a fair catch, so he just ran with it. But in a case like this, the refs would just blow the play dead instead of throwing a penalty, so this might not be what you're referring to, but idk.

I didn't see the play, but the above explanation seems like the most plausible. Keep the questions coming brother.

Most important thing to remember is this: if you miss a field goal, but the ball still goes out the back of the endzone, you get one point. It's called a rouge (it means red).

One more thing...Fair Catch can be by either one or both arms. Just as long as the hand goes above the head waving. Thanks for your questions.

Idiot. That's only if a kickoff goes into the stands.

And if the ball spills a beer, 2 points.

What if an opposing team's fan catches the ball?

Silly, he's talking Canadian football. 'Opposing' isn't allowed, it's impolite. Fans are required to root for both teams equally. But the beer rule is real.

;)

Are fisticuffs where the fighters assume the position then punch at air until one of them apologizes? Sorry, apologises.
