- Then obviously you have Snyder, and his insistence that he'll never change the Redskins name, ever

I think any team that changes their nickname for political correctness is scummy. (Marquette University should change their name back to the Warriors, for instance.) Mr. Snyder may well be a scumbag for other reasons, just not this one.

This kind of vitriol doesn't belong on these forums. In the very least you need to take it to the shack.

The color of my skin should never be brought up like it alone can be sufficient to serve as some kind of mascot. My grandmother and her mother were abducted from their homes and forcibly beaten by Jesuit missionaries whenever they spoke our language. In the boarding schools they were imprisoned in, terms like redskin were always muttered in hate by the nuns to encourage them to abhor themselves for intrinsically being savages. The word is inhuman. There is no difference between redskin and the n-word. This may never have been brought home to you because so few of us have ever left our country's boundaries to enter the United States. Most of my family in the bitterroot valley only have time to ranch and can't afford to watch tv, let alone follow football so their opinions don't even enter the picture. The handful of commercialized corporate nations you're exposed to (read: casinos, etc.) will never interfere or endanger the political livelihood they spend so much time lobbying to enjoy so their silence is egregiously irrelevant. The truth is U.S. History classes in high school understandably fail to mention government officials still offered cash bounties for a "dead redskin" well into the 1900's. I'm not a supporter of racial suffrage but the opinion you're evincing is disdainful and downright embarrassing.

Picture a team whose mascot is Asian called the yellowskins, or whose black mascot is the negroes and you'll grasp the only available legitimate analogy. You have some soul searching to do. In the end you really should just retract/revise this statement and eventually stop being a racist jerk in what would otherwise be a welcome and open forum.

Sorely disappointed that after years of browsing great opinions, Kearly's random thoughts, and catching cool info the media doesn't cover (too busy with nostalgia over east conference teams or w/e Seahawk hating nonsense) that this has to be my first post. You literally ruined my night yesterday. Thick skin is great (this is the nfl, a game for men - not pussies) but you ought to realize it isn't always sustainable and sometimes you let your guard down. Especially with the thrill of participating in a community that's about to watch our team take home back to back championships.

I'm hoping you can get past the shortsightedness of your Mel Gibson moment and talk football, not your own struggle with derogatory bullsh*t, as I fully intend to finally start doing. Although if I'm not going to get any support in this I'll probably never come back. For what it's worth I agree with you on the Warriors' stupid name change. That's trying to be politically correct to assuage the social justice idiots or soft liberal college kids and it's ridiculous. Steelers, Oilers, 49ers... Professions aren't diminutive. Every one of our Hawks is a warrior. Football is war. Just lose the "Redskins is just a nickname" rhetoric.

Welcome to the forum. You have very cogently put thought to this issue far better than anyone who is not Native American could ever hope to do, and I thank you for that.

Please continue posting.

I've been at the bar with my friends (none of us are Native American) and this topic has come up and I'm shocked with how many people think that the name shouldn't be changed because they view it as being analogous with warrior (e.g. it's a reference to vermilion face and body paint) and that the history of the NFL somehow takes precedent over the history of Native Americans...

The quote above from your post is how I try to rationalize the inherently negative racial connotations of "Redskins" to my friends.

That was one hell of a post man, very insightful and definitely provided a new perspective for me on this matter.

Sherm and he other players are probably getting very tired of Goodell's hypocrisy. They hear about protect the shield and they see this guy and his flunkies in the NFL office doing things that call into question the integrity of the league and how they arbitrarily dish out punishments and appear to protect their owner buddies.
