Penny still has a bad habit of bouncing out and/or backwards trying to get more yards than are there. He got away with it that one time tonight, but I'm sure his coaches will be talking to him about that. ;)

Barry Sanders made a career out of doing exactly what Penny did. Alexander would be prone to that as well. But then they'd hit for 50 yds and flip the field.

There is room for both kind of backs on the team. The juking high risk/reward style and the 3 yards and a cloud of dust style.

AS long as Penny makes big runs I'll accept the occasional negative play here and there. Especially from a rookie.

I would agree with that but we would still need a Carson YAC type back for 3rd or 4th and 1-2 attempts to grind out the tough yards with greater chance of success.

It's incredible how shifty he is while running. Very fun to watch so far. Between that, and Carson's obstinate physicality, our running game is once more enjoyable.

They've stopped trying to run him up the middle for the most part and are calling pitches and sweeps outside. He made all his big plays in college running from those sets. He seems most comfortable getting the ball in space starting horizontally, getting to choose when to burst forward. He actually had a couple nice shifty runs yesterday which was my biggest complaint early on, that he seemingly couldn't make anyone miss and just went down to any contact like Turbin. Nice compliment to Carson's punishing 5 yard runs.

I love the Carson / Penny one two punch. Schott is doing good job using both of them. I wonder if Bevell and Cable would have. I don't think so.

Other than the fact that Penny wasn't as ready as a first round pick RB expected to be from day one, I am happy with his performance of late, I think Penny still has more performance upside we haven't seen yet.

Many backs need 20+ touches a game on a regular basis to get into their “groove”.

I’m not ready to call Penny a bust.

Frustration is understandable I’m simply not there yet.

Edit:
My bad, I didn’t notice the date on the OP.

I accept your apology.

Wrong person, not getting one. I never called him a bust, in fact said we needed until year 2 to decide and know. :141847_bnono: I only criticized where he was taken and what he had shown early on. Anyone in their right mind would agree he was an early disappointment playing 3rd string from the 1st round. :177692:

I think a off season of NFL conditioning and his natural maturation will make him a more formidable Back inside the tackles as well.

Penny is becoming a perimeter specialist-and a damn good one at that, but as teams get more film, they're going to be expecting that toss sweep everytime he's in there. It's inperative for him to keep the D honest by getting at least 3 up the middle. Until he can consistently do that, I anticipate teams begin adjusting.

If we had thrown Penny right into the mix and ran him 15-20 times a game, by now he would be hitting the rookie wall and start feeling gassed.

Pete knows what he's doing easing rookies into the lineup, and he doesn't set his roster based on draft position. I suspect Rashaad will play a big part in any playoff games we might get to play in. And opponents won't have a lot of film on him.

Agree, his progress has been somewhat slow but very steady.

He's right on track.

He's already doing that. To say he's only a perimeter specialist is silly. He sticks it up and gets 3 yards, it's just he's not popping 8-10 yard gains consistently as Chis is. He also--despite his size isn't nearly as physical in terms of breaking tackles. I think he's doing a good job and I like what I'm seeing from the top 3 RB's on this roster.

If you want a 4.0 YPC, you need those 8-10 yard gains occasionally to balance out the inevitable 0-2 yard losses that come with the territory.
