Thought Pete surrendered on that last punt call. Thankfully, the Niners called their last drive mind-numbingly stupid and took no time off the clock.

Nope. He trusted the D to get them the ball back. If we’d gone for that and missed, game is likely over. San Fran would have had great field position and an excellent chance to get in FG range.

Trusting Russ to pick up 2 yards seems like a better bet than trusting our defense to make a 3 and out and hope the Niners don't make calls that would run the clock down further. Glad it worked, but I would have made the other gamble. Russ has shown to be more worthy of that trust in the past. It would have been a different story had we had timeouts though.

To be fair, he has a rather famous fourth and two in his past that didn’t go so well, despite having an offense that averaged about 50 points a game that season.

What 4th and 2 would that be?

USC vs. Texas in the 2006 Rose Bowl

Pete tried to get the first down to salt away the game and keep the ball away from Vince Young. It didn't work. (sigh)

Had two tabs open, one being the gameday forum, which was where this was meant to be posted. Wasn't an uncommon belief at the time when we punted on 4th & 2.
