I'm sorry but I can't see how this is a good signing. We are paying close to 4 million dollars a year for a kicker who before last year made 81% of his kicks (the league average is 84%). This past year was an outlier at 92%. Do you guys really think signing any kicker for 4 million is a good idea when he's had exactly one year of above average performance? There is almost no chance he doesn't regress some this upcoming year and no kicker in the league is worth four million a year.

There's a couple of problems with this....first and foremost, we haven't even seen the contract yet. Just because a contract is 4 years / $16 million doesn't mean it's going to pay out $4 million per year.

Next issue is that there are several of kickers who make well over the $4 million per year mark and in fact 6 other teams have at least a $4 million cap hit for the position right now. I just looked it up and there are currently 7 other kickers in the league under contract for at least $4 million per year over their contracts

Finally, we need consistency at the position. We don't necessarily need a pro bowl kicker, but we need someone who can give us a solid kicking game for years to come instead of always having to bemoan the kicker every off season. Whether or not Myers will do this, nobody can say, but at least he's got a shot to pull it off.

We have limited resources and we just spent 3 to 4 million this year on a league average kicker which aren't hard to find. You say we need a solid kicking game but this guy hasn't been solid at all in his career which is why we were able to bring him in last year for the league minimum with no guarantees. Here are his stats before last year:
- 2015: 86.7% FG, 82% XP
- 2016: 79.4% FG, 90% XP
- 2017: 73% FG, 88% XP

What part of that is consistent or solid? Just because you pay a kicker good money doesn't mean your getting a kicker who will provide you consistency or fix the kicking position. Kickers just like running backs are useless to pay because they are unpredictable and you never know what you are going to get. Those resources are better used elsewhere and just get a kicker for league minimum. They are not hard to find.

Consistency isn't just about numbers. Consistency means many things. You want to find a kicker that will be here for more than just a season and can give you the solid kickoffs along with the ability to make 50+ yard field goals. Kickers have good years and bad years. Look at Haushka and how fast some were ready to run him out of town when he had some issues. He's still a good kicker in this league.

Anyone complaining about this signing today are assuming he's going to regress back to a sub par kicker, but nobody here can know that. He wasn't a bad kicker when he was here. I was hoping we'd have kept Myers over SJ, but we didn't. That's the past, now we have a kicker making a decent salary (but not as overpaid as people like to say) who can give us consistency for the next few seasons. We already know what $2 million got us last year. I, for one, am willing to give Myers the benefit of the doubt until he shows otherwise on the field in a Seahawks uniform.

Consistency means making his kicks regularly which is something he hasn't done in career. There is a high chance he reverts back to the mean which is barely league average. And who cares if we have a new kicker every year, you act like kicking chemistry is a thing and you need to build it. Plus if he has a bad year the Seahawks will probably cut him for anthor league average kicker while taking on a dead money cap hit. There are plenty of kickers out there right now with similar stats to Jason, there is no need to pay him close to 4 mill a year. Especially when you have limited resources and lots of needs.

Sometimes it's difficult discussing things on forums, because people perceive something a certain way and they don't really read what the other person is actually saying.

Team consistency means having the same player at the same position. We haven't been able to do that at kicker for awhile now and it's something we've sorely missed.

As for your assumption that he'll regress to be a below average kicker, that is your opinion, but it's far from a fact. He could actually do better than he did last season. He could regress to be below average, he could just be average or he could be above average even with a slight regression. Those options are all realistic possibilities. If you choose to believe that there's just too much risk in the fact that he may regress, then that's perfectly within your right, but that can be said for every kicker out there. At some point they all have a regression. I'd rather wait and see how he actually performs here before I decide to write him off or call him the greatest kicker I've ever seen.

The difference between 81% and 84% is not really statistically significant.

Ignore the naysayer! He carries a cornucopia of negativity! And bullshit.

Stats lie.

Jason Myers is 91% LIFETIME From 49 yards or less.

He's made FGs from 58 yards, and 56 yards repeatedly.

So blab, blab blab!

Last year his leg improved, he was 6 of 7 from 50+

Remember, the team that cut him was the Jaguars...apparently they only looked at stats and didn't realize that his misses were from 50+, thus skewing his STATS.

True, his issue has been with kicks over 50 yards throughout his career. In fact until he joined the jets he was 10/19 over 50 yards. That's just 52%. Last year he was 6/7 that's a huge jump. Moving forward, he may definitely regress in kicks over 50 yards, but we have Dickson who can drop some beautiful punts, so kicking over 50 is not as important as kicking well under 50. I really would like to see a kicker again who I can have confidence in his kicks in the under 50 category instead of holding my breath for every kick no matter how short.

I really wonder about this place at times, how long was the Haushka thread when he was released, how long was the Walsh thread when he cost us games and how relieved when we cut him.

This kid did well last year in a outdoor stadium that ahs been known to give kickers fits, I would love to have him around for 10 years or so if he can play like that.

Glad we are moving on from Janikowski and doing it early. Myers had a probowl season last year. At 27, I would assume he has a lot of leg left. Hopefully he has a great year with us and is the answer at the position for the foreseeable future.

I am happy they addressed the kicker position and happy with the yearly wage. A bad kicker Costs the team the season, 4 mil is nothing in that Sense. But I would never sign a kicker for more than two years. Their form often varies too much year to year. But, its about the quarantees. If cutting does not cause a lot of dead cap, this is all good.

The ones who dont like it clearly cant remember Walsh or seab-ass. Nor have they Paid attention to what has happened with drafted kickers recently.

With Pete's conservative take care of the ball and keep the game close style .. Hawks need a elite kicker. House money bounced around the league, lacking consistency before finding his grove with Seattle.

House money's claim to fame was great leg but more importantly he became very consistent when he got to Seattle. This guy has more raw talent, from what little I have been able to find on him ... he was a kick off specialist at one time and Jets special teams coordinator Brant Boyer told reporters that Myers has “one of the strongest legs I’ve ever seen.” He added that he’s seen Myers hit field goals from 65 yards out in practice.

The Jaguar fans hated him for his lack of consistency and saying he can't handle the heat... Jets fans were ready to build him a statue .. the twitter thread including a bunch of NOOO and Crying memes and don't leave calling him "Money Myers".

I heard Pete in an interview saying Adam Vinatieri .. basically sucked when he played for him didn't say sucked but anyway .. so just because this guy had a rough time and was not always nails is not the end of the story.

Pete's crew ... of sports psychologists .. helped Steven Hauschka become a consistent performer and top kicker so why can't they help this guy? He is already ahead where Hauschka was when he became our kicker ... at this point all we can do is hope for the best .. but the raw talent the big leg .. the one year wonder Pro Bowl production is there .. hope for the best ... put it out in the Universe .. is all we can do.

Pete's brand of football needs a Money Myers type of kicker .. and that is why they gave him the big bucks ... it's exiting .. that he is in his prime and he has so much raw talent .. consistency can be learned and VMAC is one of the top places for helping players become the best versions of themselves .. all we can do is hope guys and gals .. but the raw talent is exiting for sure.

I would have perfer to draft someone, much like we did at punter last year. .

Dickson is far from the norm. The Vikings took a kicker in the 5th round 18 spots after Dickson and ended up cutting him.

Zane Gonzalez, Harrison Butker and Jake Elliot were all drafted in the last 2 years and were cut by the team that initially drafted them. Butker and Elliot are now successful kickers but it shows you how much of a crapshoot the draft is at kicker.

Seems like s lot of money for a guy thats been shaky until last year.

Meh so was Hauschka -- some kickers just take a while to figure things out. New York is not an easy place to kick weather wise.

Interesting, I remember the Vikings trading ahead of us to get that kicker. Since we got the punter......They cut him already? Wow.

Myers certainly didnt look all pro when we went with Seabass. I hope he earns that contract. We have been struggling too long at the kicker position. hopefully he tackles just a smidge. I cringe at Seabass' efforts last year.

there is not an all star big leg kicker ... in this years draft .. I have been looking because I wanted them to draft a young stud kicker with all the talent in the World.

This is not the year to do it ... maybe this guy washes out ... maybe he gets to the ring of honor ... maybe we cut him in a couple of years after he has been solid when we draft the next big thing .. but I didn't see a Jason Hansen when I looked at the draft prospects I could find online.

Sometimes kickers take a few years to find there grove too like Steven Hauschka and Adam Vinatieri .. and this guy we just signed Jason Myers, I bet most of the time they are inconsistent at first.

Money Myers .. big time leg ... big time one year production... chip on your shoulder ... like Russ say's .. why not us .. well why not you... I don't know but I hope for the best.

It's amazing just how rarely a new kicker makes it in the league. It's practically a fraternity, because there are only 32 spots and most of these guys have been around a long time (and, in some cases, a VERY long time). And I've always hated the "they're just kickers..." sentiment, because they literally decided seasons. Chicago very well could have won the Super Bowl last year if their guy made that kick.

So our punter gets to regularly hold snaps from the right-handed side, now.

Learning curve? Hopefully not.
