Skipping some drills is also a big deal to me at his own pro day after not doing anything at the combine.

At the risk of sounding old, the problem with Carter seems like he hasn't had to face consequences very often. Conditioning isn't good? That's fine, he can still be the star on two national championship teams and a top draft pick. Pulled over for reckless driving? That's fine, we'll give him a warning because he's a star on the football team. Fleeing the scene of an accident? That may work out fine with some community service.

If he were to fall in the draft due to this incident then I could see him using it as a wakeup call and motivation. So the team that drafts him at #33 for $4.3m could get a pro bowler with a chip on his shoulder, but a team that takes him at #3 for $24m gets a bust who's focus is on enjoying his $24m.

Gaining 9 pounds in 2 weeks is probably a red flag.
Considering what he prob put his body through to get prepped for the combine 9 lb for a 300lb football player in a couple weeks after getting ready for combine drills that emphasize speed isn't a lot. As someone who's weight goes up and down, especially when I was working out on a regular basis, this doesn't register as a red flag for me.

One thing to consider is that many athletes looking for a certain number on combine day have fasted for a day and only sipped water. From what little I know of the guy, he doesn't sound like that type, but never know....
He didn't do anything at the combine but get measured. Why would he put a ton of effort into that? This was supposed to be his big showcase. He was supposed to test and display his talents for this event. The fact that he gained weight and isn't testing shows that he didn't train beforehand. It makes no sense that he would bust his ass to get in shape for the combine, where all he did was get measured.

He didn't do anything at the combine. No drills. No tests. Nothing. Why would he have trained super hard to do nothing at the combine?

Why would he put a ton of effort into managing his measurements?

Gee IDK here we are obsessing over his measurements on a multi-page thread, but IDK why he would put any effort into his measurements. . .

Well.. the biggest red flag isn’t character. Tbh it’s work ethic. It seems to me he just severely lacks it.

The giving up on drives/plays. The conditioning. The 9 pounds in two weeks … for someone who should be staying in shape (which he can be still) 9 pounds is a lot to gain in two weeks. Either he went and hit the gym hard with a really incredible diet or her didn’t do jack at the gym, and ate like garbage.

And then the picking and choosing what he does at the combine and pro day… that’s not a team player. Doesn’t wanna do anything that exposes his conditioning or lack thereof? what’s he worried about? Being winded and tapping out after the 40 and other tests?

He’s not taking it seriously.

Edit: I hope AZ takes him, he can chill with Murray and play CoD. And we’ll take Anderson.

I mean, dude. Come on. It's almost 10 pounds in about as many days. If he's putting on weight like that, he probably isn't training - and this is a pretty important time to be training.

No one wants to see a guy gain this much weight in two weeks during combine/pro day workouts (other than Bryce Young).

This all stacks up with everything we've heard about Carter being immature and a character red flag. Don't act like others are stupid for pointing out the obvious.
I never said anyone was stupid. Geezus man, can you just go one day w/out turning something in to an argument?

I think I'm in the minority here, but I'm still open to taking him at 5. I would agree that his risks, both around work ethic and off the field stuff, are bigger today than they were a month ago. For those reasons, I probably wouldn't take him at #1. But, I'm open to taking him at 5, and would love love love to trade back 3-5 spots and get him there.

0.00% chance we take him at #5.
100% chance we draft Carter at #5 assuming he's still available. I can see teams leap frogging us just to get this guy on their roster.

He's an absolute unit who will destroy O lines all game long. Probably the best D line prospect in the last five years

So to the "no" on Carter crowd, who the hell do we take if Anderson goes to Arizona? Levis? Wilson? Trade down for more picks with "potential?" None of those options sit well with me.

Here is Aaron Donald's Draft Profile. The part that stands out for me is outstanding work ethic. You can't fake it. You have it or you don't. Easy to spot.

Highlights

Overall Strengths

+ Incredibly explosive, very quick to engage

+ Devastating pass-rusher who applies interior pressure

+ Utilizes quick, violent hands to win the leverage battle

+ Extremely athletic, covers a lot of ground and displays good agility

+ High-character player with an outstanding work ethic

Overall Weaknesses

- Marginal size with very little growth potential

- Inconsistent anchor, occasionally struggles when opponents run at him

- Can be overwhelmed by bigger, longer-limbed blockers

- Often takes himself out of position to make a play

For a guy weighing over 300 pounds, this 9 pounds is just a failure to take a good dump before pro day weigh in....lol

I'll trust the Hawks braintrust as far as who they want at 5....QB, CB, Edge, DT doesn't matter because this draft is deep when it comes to d-line. Kancey and/or Bresee will be there at 20. There will be great Edge players at 37,51,83. I personally think Isaiah McGuire would be a steal at 83 as his measurables and tape show 1st round talent.

Maybe I'm just too excited about this year's draft but I believe the Hawks can fill their positions of greatest need with some top notch talent.

some mock drafts have us taking wilson even with anderson/carter available.

At this point i just want them to take whomever gives us the best chance to murder opposing QBs.

If you're going to let the deciding factor be a 6'3" 315 lb football player gaining or losing 9 lbs in a couple weeks however, i think you've lost objectivity.
