If Hunt is looking better than Britt at this point why screw around with Britt any longer?
My theory:
They are grooming Britt to be the next McQuistan. The kind of guy that you hope doesn't ever have to start but can play all along the line.
He basically is relatively cheap, and we don't save much by letting him go. Like it or not, he's the most experienced OL in the group. If he can play emergency OC, then he has more value as a plug and play guy at 4 positions.
I fully expect to see it sorted out by the start of the third preseason game. He needs all the reps he can muster early in order to learn the new position. But I think when it comes time to play for real, they'll go with the more practiced hand (Hunt or Lewis) and relegate Britt to #2 at a lot of slots.
As for Ifedi. There couldn't have been a more striking contrast to the beginning of their first TC than Ifedi and Britt. Britt just looked ridiculously overmatched. I remember Avril just destroying him at will.
Ifedi isn't playing in space -- which I think he is less capable of doing. But on the interior he was a complete beast in college. I like that we're putting him in a position to succeed early.
If he ends up staying inside but is awesome at it I'm totally good with burning #31 overall on him.
Overall, I think there is a lot to like about these early reports. Because everyone is going into this TC with a critical eye and a patent refusal to drink the kool aid about the OL woes. So to come away with good impressions when we're all fully expecting a disaster is telling to me.
Is it early? Yeah. But we've seen bad and early before. It doesn't seem like we're talking about the same prognosis for this group of guys.
