Fans follow the club's stance 99% of the time on these things. Fans want players as cheap as possible, as it reinforces their view of team vs player. This is where a majority of the Wilson dissing comes from on these threads. Especially in light of the fact that none of the fans really know the sticking points or contract details. Thus they default to Wilson-as-greedy or reveal their existing bias against Wilson.

Interestingly, for three years everyone defended the cheap payout for Wilson, by saying that the club can't renegotiate ... no matter how much they may want to. The thought being they could compensate Wilson more fairly in year four. But what we see is that the club prefers to leverage the last year of the rookie contract and spread the new contract over that cheap year. (reducing payout impact) Makes perfect sense from a club's perspective, but it shows that the club is not as magnanimous as some like to pretend.

Seattle is like every other team in the NFL in that they extend their core players by extending them in the last year of their rookie contacts with a sizeable signing bonus.

No team is tearing up rookie contacts and paying MUCH more than they have to in that last year.
