Jahcour Pearson was born on April 25, 1998, the son of Jamal Pearson and Candice McKenzie. His hometown is Fort Lauderdale, Fla, and, just south of there, he attended Flanagan HS in Pembroke Pines. He helped Flanagan HS win the school’s first state championship. His football HC in High School was Devin Bush, Sr. While in HS, he made 43 catches for 645 yards and six TDs. He was selected to the All-Broward Team in his senior year. Broward County includes the Miami and Fort Lauderdale areas. Coming out of HS, he was ranked as a three-star prospect by 247Sports.com and Rivals.com.His senior year in HS was the academic year 2015-2016.

He attended college first at Western Kentucky, and he red-shirted for the 2016 college football season. For the 2017 college football season, he played as red-shirt freshman in 10 games although he started in none of those games. He finished that 2017 season with 7 receptions for 40 yards, including a career-long, 24-yard catch the in a bowl game against Georgia State (the Cure Bowl). On 09/16/17, he made two rushing attempts for 14 yards against Louisiana Tech. On 11/11/17, he returned three kickoffs for 44 yards in a game against Marshall, serving as the Hilltopper’s primary returner that night. For the 2018 college football season, he played in eight games as a redshirt sophomore, starting in two of those games. In 2018, he had 13 receptions for 132 yards. For the 2019 season, he played in all 13 games for the Hilltoppers, starting in 8 of those games. In 2019, he had a breakout season as a slot receiver. He finished tied for second in Conference USA with 76 carries and ninth with 804 yards, while his seven touchdowns tied for third in the league. In 2019, nationally, he finished 27th in receptions and 84th in yards. He and his teammate Lucky Jackson were only 1 of 5 FBS teammate duos who each had at least 75 catches and 800 yards. On November 9, 2019, in a game against Arkansas, he had a career-high 10 receptions and 120 yards, including a career-long 69-yard score. He, in 2019, had at least five receptions in 11 games and at least 50 yards in nine contests. He also added a 10-yard punt return in the First Responder Bowl. For his years while playing for the Hilltoppers, he appeared in 33 games, including 11 starts at receiver. In 2019, he earned second-team all-CUSA honors, after making 75 catches for 804 yards with seven TDs. Conference USA included 11 college football programs, mostly in the southeastern part of the US. In 2020, he appeared in just two games, making nine catches for 96 yards.

For the 2021 college season (his senior year), he transferring to the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), where he was coached in part by Devin Bush, his former HS football coach. He was a non-scholarship transfer who joined the football team prior to Spring drills. In the Spring of 2021, Pearson made the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. At Ole Miss, Pearson was a sport and recreation major. In his one season at Ole Miss during 2021, he played in 13 games, where he had four rushing attempts for 30 yards, the longest rush being for 16 yards. In 2021, his average yardage rushing was 7.5 yards per carry. During those 13 games in 2021, he also caught 26 passes for 392 yards, the longest reception for 45 yards. In 2021, his average yardage was 15.1 yards per catch.

In the Spring of 2022, Pearson attended the 2022 NFL Combine. At this combine, Pearson ran a 4.42 40. Following the 2022 NFL Combine, Pearson went undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft. Although Pearson did not become a UDFA with the NY Giants, he did get invited as a tryout player to the 2022 Giant’s Rookie Camp. After this Giant’s rookie camp, Pearson did not make the Giant’s 90-day training camp roster.

In November 2022, he was drafted 27th overall by the Seattle Sea Dragons in the XFL league. During the 2023 XFL Season, Pearson was the top wide receiver. (Per the article above by Mookie Alexander, “Pearson led all XFL receivers in receptions (60) and yards (670) in 10 regular seasons game played.”)

Note: One of his coaches at Ole Miss in 2021 was Devon Bush, Sr., who himself had been selected 27th overall in the 1995 NFL Draft by the Falcons, coming out of Florida State. Bush, Sr., played safety positions for the Falcons, Rams, and Browns, his final year playing in the NFL was the 2002 season. On January 30, 2000, he won a super bowl ring while playing with the Rams. Bush, Sr.’s playing highlights include:

Super Bowl champion (XXXIV)
PFWA All-Rookie Team (1995)
Bowl Coalition National Championship (1993)
Second-team All-ACC (1994)
Third-team All-ACC (1993)

In April 2013, Bush, Sr. became a football coach at Charles W. Flanagan High School in in Pembroke Pines, Florida. On February 18, 2016, Bush became a defensive analyst for the University of Michigan under head coach Jim Harbaugh, joining his son, Devin Bush, Jr., who was part of the Michigan’s 2016 recruiting class, in Ann Arbor. On February 7, 2020, Ole Miss announced that Bush, Sr. had joined their staff as their director of recruiting, where he stayed for the seasons 2020, 2021, and 2022. In 2023, Bush, Sr. was the Defensive Backs Coach for the Orlando Guardians in the XFL.

Devin Bush, Jr., was drafted as the 10th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Steelers, and he is currently an Interior LB with the Seattle Seahawks.

Hamster’s Comments: At the recent OTA, Geno Smith has said that Dee Eskridge has been shining and that Smith believes that the 2023 season will be a breakout season for Eskridge. For me, I would like to see what Eskridge can do, perhaps in the preseason games. I am projecting that six WRs will make the 53-man roster with my current speculation for five of those six in bold, perhaps Eskridge, Pearson and others competing to be the backup slot receiver.

14 D.K. Metcalf, 6’4, 229, 25, MS (’19 Rd 2 Sea) (4.33 40) (WR X)
83 Dareke Young, 6’2, 224, 23, Lenoir-Rhyne (’22 Rd 7 Sea) (4.44 40) (WR X) (STs)

16 Tyler Lockett, 5’10, 182, 30, KS St (’15 Rd 3 Sea) (4.40 40) (WR Z)
17 Matt Landers, 6’4, 200, 23, AR (’23 UDFA Sea)(4.37 40) (arm: 32.50)(WR Z) (perhaps)

11 Jaxon Smith-Njigba, 6’1, 196, 21, OH St (’23 Rd 1, Pk 20 Sea) (WR Y) (4.52 40)

1 D’Wayne Eskridge, 5’9,190,25, W. MI (’21 Rd 2 Sea) (4.40 40)(WR Y)
...Jahcour Pearson,5’7,178,25, MS via W. KY (’22 UD NYG) SeaDrag(4.42 40)(not on 90-man)

The rest of WRs on the 90-man roster

19 Jake Bobo, 6’5, 206, 24, UCLA via Duke (’23 UDFA Sea) (4.67 40) (arm: 32.25) (Y)
13 Cody Thompson, 6’2, 205, 27, Tol (’19 UD KC), Sea, Cin, Sea) (4.57 40)
82 C.J. Johnson, 6’2, 224, 22, EC NC (’23 UDFA Sea) (4.70 40) (arm: 32.00)
18 John Hall, 6’4, 198, age, Norwood-MI (’23 UDFA Sea)(no 40 time)
81 Tyjon Lindsey, 5’9, 182, 24 OR St. (’23 UDFA Sea) (4.50 40) (arm 31.48)
88 Cade Johnson, 5’11, 184, 24, SD St. (’21 UD Sea) (4.60 40) (Y) WC
86 Easop Winston,6’0,192,26,WSU(’20 UD LAR) N.O.,Cle,Sea (4.42 40)

Pearson has grown to be a YAC machine (through experiences in HS, in College, and in the XFL during the 2023 season), and he trained under a HS football coach who had been a 1st-round NFL pick as a safety and who had earned a super bowl ring. This HS football coach later became one of Pearson’s coaches in his senior year (2021) at Old Miss. This former coach (both in HS and in College) of Pearson is Devin Bush, Sr., who helped prepare his own son to be the 10th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and who is currently an Interior LB with the Seattle Seahawks. By Pearson training since HS and through some of college under a coach who was a former first-round pick DB, Pearson should continue to be what he has always been, a YAC player in the slot. Again, in 2023, Pearson led the XFL in receiving yardage. I want to see him make the 90-day training camp roster and get a shot to compete for the backup slot WR on the 53-man roster. I am a sucker for the guys on the margins.

Seems basically what Eskridge was supposed to be. The shock is we got a chance at him, thought more teams would try for him.

The knock on him is that he’s short relative to nfl players, but that was also true in the xfl…and he toasted defenders with yar constantly while staying healthy.
