He'd get that 20M and you'd see nothing but underwhelming performance after that....
He's a really good player but if previous years are an indication of how much he will see the field in the future, my offer would be much lower than what he's getting now.
Unfortunately, pretty much this. Clowney is not a football player. He's an athlete, that can play the game well.
You hear it over and over, from legitimate sources, 'his play is inconsistent, and there's the injury history."
If he wants a payday, he needs to come to Seattle with this potent offense, strong running game, and elite defensive backfield, the latter of which will get him the sack numbers in order for some foolish team to pay him 20 plus million.
How will these points help Seattle, help JaDeveon? The new look offense will get him the lead, and the running game will keep him rested up, so that when the Pro Bowler DBs blanket opposing teams pass catchers, he can go full tilt and rack up those statistics.
Players have done well to come to Seattle and play for Pete. The exposure they get, can make them money during and after the game. Marshawn was an afterthought in Buffalo and Oakland, but look at the whirlwind it stirred up when he came back home last winter?
Michael Robinson has done well for himself. He earned most of that on his own though.
Nate Burleson, the handsomest man in the NFL (barely squeaking out GQ, aka Kam Chancellor) was a Seahawk and is now on NFLN. The only other team doing so well with former players out there is Dallas.
There's a lot more ways to make money than just an NFL contract. Just ask Richard Sherman about pistachios and beef jerky.
Then there's the Hall of Fame that can make a player a valuable assett as a talking head. Bill Polian has been taking the Networks to the Cleaners for years with that "Hall of Fame" schtick.
So that NFL contract, for a smart player, can just be a security blanket, a stepping stone to real financial security. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of former NFL players that have been given business opportunities by adoring fans after they retire.
And as for playing in Las Vegas....he thought Houston was boiling... And Gruden will get him injured before the season even starts because he'll throw JD right on the field without any build up to playing against other elite players. And he'll end up just like the dozen or so players on other teams that don't know how, or just don't care, to take care of the assetts.
