Per nbcsports.com

The Seahawks are parting ways with veteran defensive end Carlos Dunlap.

That should get some traction on this site...

Somewhat surprising, but when your top sack guy has 10 or less sacks a season, maybe it's not such a big loss.

So with this happening are they switching to more of a 3-4 look?

I'm thinking they have someone else in the pipe plus Dunlap's age is probably a factor. Team is trying to get younger, mostly anyways.

It's weird how the reaction to one move can be simultaneously, "huh, didn't see that one coming," and "no surprise."

Yes they are moving to a 3-4. Still do not have the personel to run it but we will soon enough.

I posted about this being likely before, but it's partly because the void years in his contract would have led to a dead money hit in 2023 if he played out this season. It makes more sense for us to take that hit this year in a down year, especially when his performance last year wasn't great and we're changing scheme.

It does mean that we're up to nearly 50m in dead money this off-season and I wouldn't expect any high priced moves.

Dunlaps poor performance last season wasnt his fault, it was the coaching. Once he told them that they were playing him wrong, he started going off again. He was the teams best pass rusher so it makes sense that the FO would get rid of him.

So tell me this isn’t a rebuild again.
I’m not totally against a rebuild either, just call it what it is.

Why does it matter what it is called? Your term "rebuild" may not be the same as someone else's.

Strange thing to require...

Are you arguing that Dunlap playing this year was worth $6.5m in 2022 cap and $4.2m in 2023 cap? Or are you complaining just to complain about something.

I think they are trying a Mariner-like "step back."

We'll know more when we see what they do at QB.

He is a very good pass rusher. As pointed out, the coaching was improper, as was how we used him.

When we fixed that he flourished.

But

Not sure it matters what veteran players we have when we don't have a QB.

I want us to be worse, not better.

Would rather get some raw talent guys in and develop them, and he shouldn't want to waste his time on a team that isn't going anywhere.

His best option is as a situational pass rusher on a better team, not as a starter but to add depth to the lines.

I felt bad he left Cincy and then had to come here. Ironically, if Cincy had him in the SB they probably win - they really needed pass rushing and didn't have that impressive a group for that. (2 guys were solid but not to keep rushing the passer for 2-3 quarters)

He did get paid so there is that but otherwise, it isn't like there was much opportunity to win here. Or will be much.

Certainly appears so as he is a traditional 4-3 DE. It sucks to lose Dunlap, though. Fun to watch and seemed like a good dude to have around.

I think he is worth that. If the coaching wasnt such a mess clear across the board, we wouldnt be having this conversation because his results would have spoken for themselves. The defense has a big pass rush problem and they just released the best pass rusher they had. Yes, I guess I am complaining because like almost everything the FO does, it doesnt make sense.

Based on scheme, the fit wasn't there for Carlos Dunlap to get many snaps for the Seahawks next season. It's going to be Darrell Taylor and Uchenna Nwosu season.

Strange thing for you to get upset about. Just saying let’s call it what it obviously is.
There is no need for them to play words games about it.
