Specifically this from the article

“However, there were several other notable free agents who were allowed to depart, including cornerback D.J. Reed, center Ethan Pocic and tight end Gerald Everett, among others. Some fans had certainly hoped that the Hawks could earn comp picks from the league in return for these departures, however, these departures were cancelled out by the signings of the likes of Uchenna Nwosu, Austin Blythe and Quinton Jefferson, and the end result was that the team would be unlikely to receive any comp picks.”

They won’t release the actual formula but it’s supposed to be the value of free agents lost minus the value of free agents signed equals comp pick (if any).

The unrevealed is how they value a given contract and the cut off point that triggers an X round pick.

Then of course there’s the comp picks for developing and losing people of the preferred ethnicities.

Comp for losing Desai?

None. No Rooney Rule picks unless it’s an hc or gm.

A compensatory third-round draft pick for each of the next two seasons would be the prize. Lose two minority staffers to head coach and general manager roles in one year and a team would get three third-round compensatory picks.

Nine of the 19 compensatory picks in rounds 3-5, including four of the seven third rounders (3 to the Niners, 1 to the Cards) were awarded to our three division rivals.

To get compensation it isn’t required that you drafted the player.
Precisely. If the Seahawks had chosen to let Geno Smith go they would potentially have been in line for a compensatory 3rd round pick in the 2024 Draft, (assuming they didn't spend money an another high priced FA, which would have cancelled it out). This is about a net loss of valuable players who were on expiring contracts.

The Brock Purdy pick was a 7th round comp for cj beathard. In what universe was cjb a valuable player?

The compensatory pick system is designed to generate 32 picks so there is effectively 8 rounds of the Draft. Not every player leaving a club qualifies for the compensatory pick formula. If a team has 2 qualifying players whose contracts expire and they leave and the team then signs 2 qualifying players then the team gets nothing. Consequently it's not the most valuable 32 players that generate picks. It's for teams that lose players and choose not to replace them in free agency. The NFL goes down the non-retained list until they have enough picks. Some years there aren't enough FA losses to fill all the picks, (in which case the remaining picks are given to teams in Draft order for doing nothing). Beathard generated the last pick with his average $2.5M salary per year signing. In the grand scheme of things compensatory picks have very little value.
