Slants are the toughest pass plays in any playbook - for the very reasons this one failed. They are risky, they don't give the QB any time to go through progressions (they are designed as bang-bang grab-and-shoot plays), and they require that the WR have 'good hands' (because the QB is pretty much throwing to a spot sight unseen).

On top of the degree of difficulty of any slant, the play was a poor choice against a DB that knows your playbook.

But once called, it was Lockette's play to make -- and he failed. Yes, Bevell should be called out for selecting it and Russell could have put it an inch closer and lower. But, at the end of the day (or night, in this case) Bevell is correct in pointing the finger at the WR for not going stronger to the ball.

Two weeks ago, Lockette made a terrific catch. Last night just wasn't his night.
