Lock and Howell are both graded 60 by pff — average backup QB level.Imho Howell is better than Lock. So with that being the case, why can’t he push Geno for the job?
1. College stats?
Washington let him go because they weren't guaranteed the chance to draft at #2 overall in the future and Howell hadn't seized the reins as a franchise player.I still have to ask,,,,,if Howells so good why did Washington let him go and why isn't he starting ahead of Geno Smith? Payton wouldn't give a 3rd for him? Wonder why?
This admiration for Howell has to stop. He's a cheap backup and nothing more.
I understand that it may have been due to the coaching culture, issues with the General Manager and the lack of protection which led to his demise in Washington. I think that's what John saw possibly and the potential for Howell with what he was envisioning with Seattle. All speculation of course, but I've heard this from various sources as well. Combine Howell with how MacDonald's coaches here in Seattle may lead to a different outcome in the near future.Washington let him go because they weren't guaranteed the chance to draft at #2 overall in the future and Howell hadn't seized the reins as a franchise player.
He's a backup, but there's some potential with a bit of coaching.
Howell's line actually wasn't bad in Washington. Most of those sacks he took were on him. Howell plays a little like Wilson in some regards.I understand that it may have been due to the coaching culture, issues with the General Manager and the lack of protection which led to his demise in Washington. See now I have no problem with those full stats or analysis. I also hope he gets a chance to start. I don’t want to waste another year with Geno not knowing what we have in Howell and then finally start him his last contract year only to have him do well and become high dollar or fail and waste another year without the position figured out.In 2023 Washington had the least rushing attempts (359) and the most passing attempts (636) in the NFL for a 36% run and 64% pass ratio.
Howell was sacked a league high 65 times and threw 21 INT's which I'm sure both contributed to his being extra tentative in the pocket.
Put SH in a situation with a stronger run game, better coaching & play calling, improved protection, talented recievers and a defense to keep the game close and he could be legit.
Maybe not a perrenial top 5 QB but I could see him evolve into a long term starter as a top 10 talent.
Glad they made the trade.
Lag affects since,This back and forth reminds me of lag affects. Post draft lag affects can last a long time with fans who didn't get what they wanted and can't get over it. I anticipate this will continue for months to come again this year.
During the season, the lag affects of the last game bleeding over from the game day forum into the main forum are somewhat overtaken by the following game. As a result, I begun to avoid seahawks.net until Wednesday ... Thursday during the season. That works for me. Calmer waters.
There is a lot of variation among forum members as to how they react and can handle outcomes.
He’s allowed his opinion as you are yours. No need to slam or be rude about it“Through 7 games” lol

Wow.. clearly you have nothing better to do than to bring up stuff from a while back cuz your feelings apparently are hurt. So sad.Don’t worry I won’t start a Bobby Wagner thread.
Actually, Drew Brees wasnt blowing the doors off of anything when he came into the league. He was a second round pick. his rookie year, he couldnt beat out Doug Flutie. Year 2, he started, but threw for 17 TDs and 16Ints and just over 3000 yards for a team that finished at .500. year 3, he was replaced again by Flutie. It wouldnt be until his 4th year that he really cemented himself as a bonafide starter. And similarly, his team's FO went out and drafted Phillip Rivers as their future. The following year, Brees gets hurt, goes to NO and the rest is history. Before that year, he was 10 and 17 as a starter, and that was with LT toting the rock behind him.I wouldn't go with a bold take one way or the other on Howell. QB's rarely get to take the "scenic route" to become franchise QBs so its a long shot to begin with. If someone's going to do it, Howell's career start isn't bad. He got to start a full season with lots of highs and lows. He got almost given away by WASH but could just be undervalued by a potentially bad FO. He's going to back-up a QB who didn't take the scenic route to becoming a franchise QB but took that route to becoming a decent starter.
