Totally OVERrated music?

Well loved, but to me it sounds like the band had one, VERY long song that switched tempo a bit, but was all basically one song God I hate them!

I can think of a lot more but I'll start with that. Oh and throw this in for shits and giggles, the whole genre of "new country"!

As far as Boston, I think they get unfairly bashed for being in that first wave of rock "sell outs." INSANELY talented musicians, especially Delp on vocals. One of the top rock vocalists of all time.

Maybe I'm too young to hate on Boston, but that 1st album is almost flawless. Bangers from top to bottom.

I know I'll catch hate for this, but IMO the most overrated genre of music, of our generations at least is the Nu Metal craze of the 90's and early 2000's. Linkin Park, Korn, Limp Bizkit, System of the Down, NIN.

Yeah there's some good stuff in there. But out of all the genres, it's held up the least. Most of it just sounds lame and corny now.

I understand the Boston thing. Not on board with it, but I get it. But as far as debut albums? Its that one, Appetite and the first VH record that are forever classics.

I think the "corporate" rock label comes from people older than me (late 50's, 60's etc). People who were tired of listening to bands like Boston, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, etc. that dominated mainstream radio.

I was only single digits in the 70's, so I missed all that and just grew to love these bands later on in life as I came to appreciate good rock music. Anyway, my two cents on why I think bands like Boston get a lot of hate.

Sarge- take NIN off the list and I would agree with the rest. Reznor is a freaking genius though.

Reznor is indeed a genius when it comes to things like composition, mood, production, sound design, etc. Obviously, that's what he does now, film scoring.

But if you go back and listen to those early NIN albums, they do sound dated and even more egregious rip offs of the synth heavy bands Reznor loves growing up like Depeche Mode, New Order etc.

Like I said above, there is some good stuff in my Nu Metal criticism, like NIN.......and even some Korn, but I still would group them in.

Wow. Punch the home town boys right in the jimmies! Can't argue with most of those, but I'd say you have to give Pearl Jam a pass just for their live shows. Go see them in Seattle on Friday, then Portland on Saturday you will get about six hours of music with maybe only three or four of the same songs being played. Best live band out there, IMO.

Certainly could never figure out REM either.

Since I haven't made a contribution to this..I'd say there is no reason for Oasis to have ever made it or to be still being played on the airwaves. Oh, and I'd throw Gretta Van Fleet in the same boat.

Motley Crue. Never liked them. Figures the only likable guy in the band is now gone. The other 3 are d bags. Damn that Netflix movie for bringing them back.

As a life long musician...I played semi-pro guitar in night club bands and other musical gigs until age 40. I must say that since in the time that the computer has become the main "instrument" of artists and producers, since about 2000 or even earlier...I have found the artistic quality seems to be declining. There are some notable exceptions such as guitarist Marcus King and others, but...

I don't even listen to most current artists...But, I am playing trumpet in a college band with about 30 other humans playing written arrangements of century old music. I'm still, "shredding" on the guitar too.

Sorry, I sound like a "get off my lawn" old man...But I really only enjoy "real human beings" making music...real strings and horns, a human playing keyboards and a bass part. Today, with help from the computer, anyone can come up with musical sounding results, and can sing like a bird with digital pitch correction...

Get off my lawn youngster!!!

Can't have an overrated music thread without mentioning Bruce Springsteen and U2.

Edit: My bad. U2 was already mentioned. Still bears repeating.

Boston is anything but corporate rock. Tom Scholtz (sp) recorded the entire 1st album in his basement. He is an MIT Graduate so he's remarkably adept, but the opposite of corporate. Their 2nd album, Don't Look Back, was recorded in studio. Tom was extremely upset when the record company overdubbed semi-disco beats to make it more dance friendly. Tom boycotted recording a new album in protest. Other band members recorded under Barry Goudreau and Orion The Hunter. I enjoyed Boston in the day and still like it. I was always a funk fan, Ohio Players, Parliament etc but enjoyed the late 70's hard rock as well.
I get how people label Boston as well as Kansas as groups where the songs seem to blend but I did enjoy them in the Day. I never developed a taste for country though.
