That's a crock IMHO, you can gulp down all the Kool-Aid you like, but I see Pete & John's draft day record more as "could have done better" than the best draft record out there. Blackout the 2012 draft and the majority of the rest are very lackluster, even poor.
High picks matter and with all the busts & dilution trading down, they have basically distanced themselves from success in the early rounds.

Their metric is CAVOE which is interesting. If you look at the numbers the 2012 draft was over 200 (one of the best drafts of all time IMO) but since then the number has been average / negative. The 49ers in contrast were terrible from 2012-2016 under Baalke but have been average, a little positive under Lynch except for the big misses on Rueben Foster and Solomon Thomas. It would be neat if they redid it in the last 5 years as a 10 year span is pretty long and the NFL is a "what have you done for me lately" business

Yeah it doesnt have to be lightning in a bottle, it just is not missing on the high rounders and getting value in the second and 3rd rounders that translates into wins.

I've noted that the linked article is strictly a PPF/ESPN entertainment driven article.

From the article .............. How we rank: To evaluate the players taken in each of the past 10 NFL drafts (2012-2021), we used Approximate Value (AV) -- Pro Football Reference's method of measuring the performance of every NFL player. We took each player's career AV and measured it against a value based on where that player was taken in the NFL draft -- we're calling it Career Approximate Value Over Expected (CAVOE).

Neither PPF nor ESPN actually field a team or execute a draft or develop players as a NFL franchise.

THeir later drafts were in the 20s and 30s. Whereas SF, LA, and AZ have had early picks to grab players like Nick Bosa at #2, Kyler Murray at #1, and Aaron Donald at #9.

You MUST weight their pick position in any determination.

John Clayton had some great stats, that have been backed up by NFL draft experts. "The 1st round normally has 15 - 20 players with 1st round grades. (Meaning Seattle rarely had a "legitimate" 1st Round pick).

Clayton's database also showed that "NFL Draft Picks 20 - 32 75% never sign a 2nd contract with the drafting team"

If you read it, they are making hey on 3 drafts, and outside of them not good at all.

Yeah, I'd like to see just the past three or five years as well. 2012 certainly has a lot to do with this ranking.

You pretty much have to block off the years with Scott.

He filled rosters with Stars and AllPros everywhere he went.

We don't have him.

Also, you don't get to trade away your picks then use the lower rounds as evidence you couldn't have expected to do better.

It is actually pretty funny that there is some mathematical model out there that basically shows that we are dong a great job with the drafts when by almost every other measure we are one of the worst in the NFL at it.

Our ability to draft for need is horrific, but we are good at swinging for the fences and occasionally landing someone like a Metcalf. But for the most part, our drafts are horrible. Things like a 7th rounder turning in Carson offset that a little but the inability to draft means our roster usually has gaping holes in it.

But if you want to pretend we have a great chance to rebuild this roster, we will see how that works out. So far, it has been a failure and they have had at least 3 years.

I've posted along these lines before but our issue has always been not having enough draft capital in the first place. The scouting has seemed pretty good given what we've had to work with, and posters underestimate how many busts every team has and how uncertain the draft is.

The lack of draft capital isn't entirely their fault. It's hard to find spots for rookies on a really stacked roster (2013), the draft order heavily penalizes successful teams, and when you think you're currently in a Super Bowl window it's not attractive to stockpile with youth.

That being said, the FO bears the ultimate responsibility because they know the rules and how the system is set up. Trading picks away for players so often and not maximizing compensatory picks every year were short term moves that tried to stave off rebuilding as long as possible. However, you just can't sustain a good roster under the NFL's salary cap without a constant infusion of rookie contracts.

How bad were the other team's draft? Dang!
That's basically it. 2020 for example is looking pretty rough two years later; seven of the top ten picks have been underwhelming (or worse) and there haven't been many mid round standouts yet.

I did a little bit of research league wide. Based on total Games played, and years a player has been a starter... Seattle is about middle of the league since 2012.

Seattle's drafts may look bad to Seahawk Fans, but in reality it's not that much worse than other in the league. Even if players don't stay here doesn't mean it was a bad pick.

10 years ago Tom Coughlin won the Super Bowl with the Giants. He “resigned” in 2015. Maybe the Giants should have kept him around. Lifetime contract for one great year/draft no matter how much you stink afterwards.
