The Raiders have filtered through a lot of coaches in recent years, some of them very young. A culture setter could be just what they need. I don't think every hire a team makes needs to be with the mindset that they'll be around for decades. He signed a three-year contract with a fourth year team option. If he has them in the right direction in 3-4 years, that job will be very attractive.
Let me rephrase things, I don't think he'll have them on the right route given the way things went in Seattle over his last few years. His choice in coordinators as well as him turning the back on some of his core principals that he had when he first landed here is what lead to his decline here. Also keep in mind, whatever culture he does set could just as easily be undone by the guy that follows him.

Is he good with players still? Sure, but that isn't enough. One of his core beliefs was his success in the NFL was tied to control. He is not going to have that in Las Vegas. I don't think this is going to be a successful stint.

Look for his sons to have high level coaching positions, at the end of his contract could be set up to transition.

Good to hear and good for him. They could do with some positivity and he’s a walking, talking slab of it. His ideas grew stale on the players in Seattle, but that was after 10+ years
Players love and respond to him. It's the fans that grew impatient and restless. Pete was once again on his way to building another nice roster. A great season for the new coach would have been unacceptable for Pete, y'all callling for his head. Slowly but surely our great players will retire or dip out. They dont believe in the new coach. At this point, I'm more interested in watching the raiders next year. Seahawks ain't gonna do ish...

Exactly.

Pit showing his classic bias and myopic worldview yet again.

Lol. I’m showing how idiotic Mark Davis is and how incompetent the Raiders organization is. Pete’s 73 years old and openly admitted that he wasn’t understanding what some teams were doing in his last couple of seasons in Seattle and he’s the guy you want to rebuild your team in an already loaded conference?

I get that a lot fans are happy for him. I feel sad for him. This new gig will further tarnish his legacy.

My closest friend Phil is a 49er fan, and his father barracks for the Raiders. Phil got into the NFL through his dad (now 91), who followed American football for many years before he (and later I) were ever interested. I must ask his dad what he thinks of this Coach choice!

But... when I first started watching the NFL in 1985, the Raiders were the arch-enemy, when we were in the AFC West. That hit on Steve Largent (I can't remember who), and the fact they were a current power team back then. I even heard claims from Seahawks fans being intimidated in the stadium in Oakland.

Well, good for Pete, anyway.

Happy Australia Day, to any Australians here!

The Seahawks had been floundering for 10 years under Carroll. His playoff record since the 2014 season is dismal. Carroll built his reputation as a defensive coach in the NFL, but hadn't fielded a top 10 defense since 2010.

Carroll has not had a significant victory in the playoffs since 2014 and since then the Seahawks have a losing record in the playoffs. Despite Carroll's wildly successful first 5 years, he has only a .500 record in the post season. In fact his only wins came against a 40 year old McCown, and injured Stafford and because of a go ahead chip shot field goal that was missed by Blair Walsh in the final seconds of the game.

Carroll also fielded some defenses that were historically bad defenses the last two years.

What makes thing worse is a defense with the most of the same players immediately had a large improvement underneath MacDonald.

Look, Carroll isn't a bad coach -- but he's made some huge missteps over the years. The guy has lost touch with the modern day NFL. He's a great motivator, but he's become disconnected with the X's and O's of the game. He struggled to transition to the modern NFL.

I appreciate what he did for us, but the guy was clearly struggling to deliver anything other than fringe wildcard teams. At the age of 74 come September he's not going to get any better. I can see him making the Raiders play better, but also still missing the playoffs by a sizable margin. It has been a bit like watching a relative in decline these last few years.

I love what Carroll did for us, but it was time we moved on. Also, if the Seahawks aren't doing jack this year, why do you think the Raiders will do any better? They're in a worse position and in a much more brutal division.

The Patriots and the Jets would like to have a word with you.
If your "gotcha" on Carroll is that he had a winning overall record in his first two stops as an NFL coach 30 years ago, then the Raiders should be on their knees thanking the lord because even that level of success is rare for them.

I think Pete is going to take Lockett and possibly Geno.

But what's really interesting to me is the relationship between Carroll and Brady. Carroll has always been unconventional and Brady seems kind of hard core discipline focused. It doesn't feel like a match to me. On the flip side, are we going to see the same Carroll? Carroll took a year off to rejuvenate.. the question in my mind is, whameat kind of reflection has the time off changed Carroll's thinking in the way he approaches the game

Anybody hear what the power structure looks like?

This is about as fair as a critique as you can have and it’s hard to argue with any of it
