It took 2 1/2 years for the defense under Pete to get it and be consistent, that was a very simple defense that just required you to maintain your gap. Mikes defense is vastly more complex and requires players to think and know assignments and changes with the deceptions. This will take a while, also he has to bring in players that fit, he and John went to the cast-off list to see what they could get and hope to get lucky. Put that all together and then add teams have seen it and are now adapting to where it's weak links are we are where we are.
Except, it was not a slow turnaround under Pete. In 2011, the Seahawks were 7th in scoring defense and 9th in yards. In 2.5 years, Pete had the best defense in the league.

Huh?

You must be thinking of the 2021 season, when Don “Wink” Martindale was in his last year as Ravens DC, and they were ranked 19th. That was one of the worst years for a Harbaugh defense, and was the catalyst for replacing Martindale with MM.

Despite a slow start, MM’s first year as DC was very successful. Baltimore ended the 2022 season ranked 3rd. His second season, they were ranked first.
Yes, you're right, I stand corrected. I thought 2021 was Macdonald's first year, but it was actually 2022.

Our Defense is just bad. B Murphy being about the lone bright spot this year. Even Woolen and Spoon just look mediocre nowadays.

Nobody fears this defense, save maybe our offense and coaching staff...

If that's what ownership believed, then maybe they aren't high football IQ people. They had to completely revamp the front 7 and had to find a center at the last minute because their guy isn't ready to start, on top of the fact that the oline was already bottom of the league.
We know they aren't high football IQ people. Bert Kolde is an absolute dolt.

I think Williams pretty much has it figured out. He basically says guys are not doing their job, but rather choosing to play hero ball. A great example of that was a play they showed in the video breakdown when Spoon came across the backside and could have wrapped up on the ball carrier behind the LOS. Instead he chose to try to create a punchout fumble. Missed on both counts and the runners made additional yards.
Coach said it plain, the guys have not yet mastered the basics and until that happens they can't even begin to play the defense he wants them to play.
Our guys just haven't bought in as far as they need to. But they will, after they see on film that what they're doing does not work. Still far too many arm tackle attempts instead of wrapping up. We are getting killed in the running game by yards after contact.

Given it was a perfect storm, Pete brought in a new type a player at CB and SS and FS, instituted the Elephant DE, players that fit these positions were there for the taking, not so now since that model has been duplicated across the league. We were able to catch lighting in a bottle, you don't have that option this time around unless you create a new model with a new type of player at positions to fill those roles.
