The Stealers aren't gonna be able to use this "calf" excuse forever. Sooner or later, they are gonna be forced to admit that they think Fields gives them a better chance. That oughta sit well with John63 and the rest of Team 3.

Would Russ still get his guaranteed money if he retired or does he have still have to be active in NFL?

He might lose some if he filed retirement paperwork, maybe? But even if he isn't on a roster I don't see what would motivate him to do that.

Still think it's going to be a revolving door in Pittsburgh. When Fields starts losing (probably starting this week) they'll put Wilson in, but it'll be no better.

I read this article regarding Tua. According to the article, players only get their guaranteed money if they have to retire for medical reasons. If they retire during their contract w/o a medical reason, they forego their guaranteed money. That is my understanding based on the article.

I wonder how Russ's greatest and now probably last homeboy (john63) is taking all this?
Any of you find him in the pissburg forums? Seems he disappeared as "dean whoever" when me3 left Denver. I hear there are some good mental institutions in Colorado, Glenwood Springs ring a bell..
I see him ‘flossing’ with his Terrible Towl, while Russ is going through his antics of running plays pre-game, screaming ‘LET RUSS COOK’.

Thanks for the link. I am wondering that Wilson was released by Denver, would they make a difference? What if Pittsburgh release him again this season?

Last I saw, he was calling Dan Orlovsky a hack for criticizing Russell's Steelers preseason performance.

This was on Twitter. I can't share as the account uses his real name.

Interesting. I wouldnt be surprised if he felt like he was done with the NFL after Denver but was just sticking it out until he received all his guaranteed money. I mean this calf strain sounds really suspicious for a guy who plays through anything and heals so quickly.

Let's pump the brakes a bit. There's no reason for Tomlin to play coy with Wilson's availability. He strikes me as the type of guy who would have no issue naming Fields the starter.

Similarly, as we saw with CMC, sometimes a calf issue is teamspeak for an Achilles injury. That would explain the uncertainty surrounding Russell's availability. Honestly, this is the most likely explanation. By all accounts, Russell worked extremely hard this offseason to increase his mobility. We've seen this time and again with athletes over 30—getting in the best shape of their lives and immediately injuring their Achilles from all that added stress.

Either way, it's not a great sign for the future of his career.

Denver is paying him $40 million this season, he had to be released to avoid
paying him 3-4 more years.
Pitt is only paying him a million for this year only, after this year ME3 is a FA
and no team owes him anything unless he signs with a team.
He simply waits till the year ends if he wants to collect every penny before
hanging up those cement cleats.
I see him thinking he can still play but nobody is stupid enough to fall in that
trap.

I wonder what he does post career. Doesnt seem like he would be a good coach- not very relatable. Talks in too many cliches for media. Sounds like some of his non playing ventures have bombed. It's not even like he can go back to Seattle and soak up the love the way Shawn Kemp, Griffey etc do as he burned bridges here.

Probably 3rd world inspirational speaking, or charity work, in countries that don't closely follow NFL football. He has enough money that he can sit on his ass the rest of his life, if he wants too. Just needs something to keep his mind occupied.
