Mariners get 3rd overall pick. They had a very small chance
Such a fine line between success and failure in MLB. It always seemed like Ackley might figure it out, but he never did. He looked like the real deal his rookie year, and then again briefly flashed after he was traded to the Yankees. And I was bummed about Ackley, I liked him, I thought he was gonna be good.
Man, safe is cool… but that’s why we didn’t get Troy tulowitzki or Mike trout or Trevor story, was Griffey safe? I want them to get a starThe safer thing in baseball is to take the top pitchers. The Mariners have a better track record of developing them plus you can never ever have too many pitchers. They can always be flipped or allow you to flip another. The thing with baseball as opposed to other sports is you don't draft based on need because they take time to get to the majors (majority of the time) but I will say if Holliday or Laviolette drop to the Mariners I would love to see them take one of those position players.

His last year in the majors was 2016, when he was only 28. He spent two years in AAA for the Angels' affiliate, and then was re-signed by the Mariners in 2019 only to be released in spring training.

Even after drafting him number 2 overall, the Mariners didn't think Ackley had enough power to occupy an outfield position, hence the attempt to move him to second base. It might have been too much for him to move up to the big leagues and learn a new position at the same time. If they had left well enough alone, he might have had a decent career. Who knows, though, really?Sometimes I wonder if his failure to have a true position never let him settle in
