Offensively:
I think Grubb gives up on the running game too easily. I think the idea that we should 'pound the rock' is pretty folly because we suck at that. We just do. But we have to keep the defense honest and give Geno that extra half second of time to make the pass play. I think Grubb sees we run the ball, it gets stopped immediately for one or two yards, and he panics to try and get us back ahead of the chains.
I get that, but sometimes you have to sacrifice a play or two to keep the other side honest later. Additionally, there are times we can pound the rock and just not worry about if it's successful. (The plays before the ill-fated field goal, attempt, for example.) Sometimes, you gotta run just to run.
Defensively:
The first three games, our pass rush was excellent, so our defense was excellent. We've been without Mafe and Murphy for two games now and our pass rush was trash and our defense was trash. This is on players, yes, because they aren't executing what has been called but it's ALSO on the coaches who aren't changing things up for the personnel we have or when what isn't working keeps not working.
If we get Murphy and Mafe back for the Niners, I will not at all be shocked to see this defense look great again... but Macdonald HAS to figure out what to do when he doesn't have those guys for a series, a half, or a game.
