Nice! Sounds pretty badass! I'm really liking Windows 8. I don't have a touchscreen though so I pretty much just bypass Metro. Miss my start button a little but other than that it's been pretty smooth sailing!

I didn't want a touchscreen till I started playing around with win 8. with all the tablets and such taking over I figured I might as well get on board.

more than I wanted :( Ive been so used to buying cheap laptops and throwing them aside after 2-3 years. This one was a grand. Only thing I came up a little short on (that I tell so far) is the hd rpm. haven't noticed yet but we'll see what happens when I dump a game on it.

hope google picks up the pace on chrome for metro, wee bit of a letdown so far. But I guess ie would have a pretty good head start on a new MS OS

If you are using Windows 8 and feel lost without your start menu, I recommend using Start8 from Stardock. I've been using it, and it's great! And only $5.

The thing I like about windows 8 is in the start menu you just type in the application you want to open. No more searching.

Yeah, that's cool, but the thing I don't like about it is having to type it in when before I could just find the icon and click it (when on the traditional desktop obvs, not switching over to Metro). Unless I'm doing something wrong.

o.k. a few hrs. in, I'm kinda digin windows 8. the metro aspect is pretty cool with a touchscreen. would be a big pain in the ass i think otherwise. found a seahawk app, pulls feeds from .com, cbs, nfl.com,and espn, kinda cool.

LOVE the battery in the new rig, had to plug the old one in two hrs ago and still have two more to go on the new one.

I type much faster than I move a mouse searching for an application. Windows key, 'calc' and I open the calculator. Takes less than second. I also have 800 things on my desktop.

That being said, I could do the same thing on my WIN7 computer just wasn't as pretty and my desktop is folders instead of apps and folders.

Not sure how anyone can think Windows 8 sucks. Better security, better kernel, faster, an attempt at a better user experience.

If you've used XP for 10 years I understand it may seem like a tough transition, but 8 is miles ahead.

It is all those things Sonic....most definitely an attempt at a better user experience. Its just too quirky at this point. One moment you can flip and scroll pages, the next you cant and have to use the arrows. Apps start on their own for no reason. One min. I am typing on .net, then poof...back to the start screen.

The kernel is the same VMS/IBM OS/2 derived kernel they've used since the original Windows NT. It's hardly a leap forward from anything they have used in the past. Nothing more than iterative improvements, including support for stuff like USB 3.0. Big freakin' deal.

Windows 8 sucks from the standpoint of business or high end users who tune their Windows install to better suit their performance needs. The GUI is also complete crap.

Let's put it this way, if Windows 8 was so good, why is Microsoft releasing Windows 8.1?

Every operating system ever made has quirks and updates and new versions and eventually a successor.

If I could run the latest computer games in a Linux distro without many problems right when they came out, I'd run Linux instead of Windows on my main computer; that's for sure...

The biggest issue with Linux as a desktop is its multimedia support. Because nobody can agree on a single solution to serving up sound (ALSA, OSS, aRts, ESD, JACK, PulseAudio), Linux will forever suck as a multimedia OS.

That, and needing WINE to play freaking games. It's unfortunate.

WINE is a royal pain in the ass I agree.

I put ubuntu on a garage sale laptop I brought back from the dead because I was too cheap to pay for a "real" OS. I was super impressed with it. If not for the inability to use all my regular programs, i'd run ubuntu on everything.

If you think WINE is bad now, you should see what it was like 10 years ago. Lawd a'mighty...You used to have to manually copy Windows DLLs and crap to your Linux distro, specify paths for Direct X files and environments, etc. It was horrible. It's nowhere near as bad now, but still cumbersome compared to just installing it in Windows.

I've only had a few run-ins with Windows 8, but I hated it. The concept of having a tablet and a desktop being able to interact on the same OS is a great idea, but it sounded to me like they screwed it up something fierce.

Buy Stardock's Start8 for $5. Problem solved. Windows 8 has various improvements that make it unquestionably superior to Windows 7, so fix the Start menu issue as I mentioned, and there's no reason not to like it, IMO.

Thanks for the head's up on Stardock. I'm definitely gonna do it. Can't stand the interface on W8. I'm too old school I suppose.

Windows 8 is horrible for those of us in the video editing profession. There are too many problems, one of them being the USB 3.0 drivers. Microsoft locked down the drivers, so independent manufacturers couldn't update them. This makes a lot of USB 3.0 devices unusable, unless you use the hack to get around Microsoft's block.

I'd personally just use Windows 7, which doesn't have that issue, and seems more stable.

I hadn't heard about the USB 3.0 thing. That sucks. Microsoft, why did you pull a "Final Cut Pro"? >.<
