A post draft Ty Powell interview

Since this is a current Seahawk (not a pre-draft interview, either)... I'm posting this in the main forum. With the news that the Seahawks knew of Irvin's suspension even before free agency, here's hoping that we see big things from Ty Powell. He was the only player I mocked to the Seahawks.

This is not the short phone interview. This was done on his campus. He hung up on San Diego when the Seahawks were calling his phone. I hadn't seen this posted in here yet.

Can always find a place to put that to good use. I know that the Hawks will miss Irvin's edge speed for the 4 games, but I wonder if Powell might be a more complete player. He's got some wheels and fluidity as well. I know I'm talking about a 7th rounder vs. a 1st rounder and, of course, looking forward to Irvin's return and contributions. But, he's often characterized as just a pass rusher. Powell has even played DB and so I'm hoping he's got great coverage skills and he ends up as one of the steals of the draft. Seems like a versatile player. I'm pulling for him now more than ever. I'm even optimistic about a couple of the UDRFA's as well. But, it's cool to know that Powell was being sought after by the Chargers and possibly other teams... then, the Seahawks nabbed him.

Right on. The problem with all of Irvin's "speed" is teams learned to use it against him. He wasn't strong enough or skilled enough to develop consistent techniques to get around tackles, so teams would let him get his speed going and then ride him right out of the play. It happened a LOT. He will learn, but it was a big issue last season and one of the reasons why he disappeared for so much of the season.

It will be interesting to see a guy like Powell and what he makes of his chance.

When Claire Farnsworth was asked on the Bob and Groz show if there were any disappointments at the Seahawk Rookie camp. Claire responded "Ty Powell".

Way to put a spin his answer. He said it wasn't necessarily a 'dissapointment,' but Powell didn't jump out at him. Softy used the word 'dissapointment' when he asked the question;' Claire removed the term from in his answer. The guy was being used in ways that it was hard for him to really stand out.

I am curious to see an 'inspired Bruce Irvin' come back with a dedication & focus we have not yet seen from him. As he cannot help but feel the hot breath of Ty Powell, 7th rounder with nothing to lose, breathing down his neck and possibly taking away his roster spot. I predict Irvin will be better than ever when he returns, and a lot of the rough edges to his game will have improved overall.

Y'know, it could simply be that JSPC knew of this wayy early, and invested a 7th rounder to get a down and dirty 'poor man's version of Irvin' for the 4 pre- and first 4 regular season games.

Did not think that I spun anything.

At about 3:20 the questions was " How about disappointment"

"The one guy that didn't do anything that jumped out at you was Ty Powell. There again he was a 7th round pick....As far as calling him a disappointment"

Softy does not work for ESPN and was not one of the interviewers.

When Pete Carroll was asked how Ty Powell made out, he commended that he was not in the kind of condition required at this level. (His Rookie Camp post first day interview).

Does not mean that he won't be a hell of a player. Still a long way to go.

I would give Powell a pass until he learns what's expected of him. I think he's going to knock the snot out of opponents.

Maybe Ty Powell was as much a "disappointment" as Michael Bowie was "dominating".

LEO is one of the hardest positions to place, on this team. It requires a special kind of athleticism as well as a little intelligence to diagnose what's happening in nano-seconds, and an even quicker decision to sell out to the QB or contain the edge vs the run. Its a position where progress is made in baby steps but once a player becomes consistent and understands the duties being asked of him he can go from a 28 year old journeyman linebacker to a guy who registers 11+ sacks per year for 3 years for a team with a top 10 defense in 2 years, and arguably, one of the league's underappreciated and unacknowledged players in terms of importance.
