What a great pickup. There is going to be some serious competition on the D-Line this year.

They got incredible value here, and he's perfect for the scheme. Great pick.

I always enjoy reading the posts on the Scout FB forums following a pick; here's the link to the 'Bama thread following Williams.

General consensus (and I know, it's a bit of homerism) is that this was an absolute STEAL.

I love that we only trade up to get these kind of bad asses steals in the late rounds.

Again some of the people who booed the Hill pick said why not take Williams? Well we got him anyways, 2 rounds later :)

This is not a 1 tech, IMO. His lower body is long legged and is smaller in proportion to his upper body. Bama played him at 1 tech last season and it was hard on his legs. This is a Red Bryant type of player that will need to play 3 and 5. Not 1 tech. Awesome value in the 5th. He's in the backfield a lot.

Over at NFL.com, looking at their draft grades, they gave Williams an 85.5...which was the highest number since pick 81 (3rd round, Damontre Moore, DE, Giants, 87.9).

What did this guy do? Kill a nun? And if he did, are only NFL front offices aware of it?

BTW: Thanks again Detroit! Please come again!

We got a pass-rushing DT in Hill and a big, burly run-stuffer in Williams. I'm loving this draft.

Personally, I think he can play any position on the defensive line, outside of Leo. He ran a 4.9 40 at 325 lbs and has the mobility and athleticism to play the role Alan Branch had last year. At worse, he's a backup to Mebane and Red. At best, he starts at the 3-tech as a 2-down run-stuffer and competes/replaces Red or Mebane a year or three down the road. Not bad for a 5th rd pick!

Edit: there are concerns about Williams' knee which caused him to fall. He's an early round prospect if healthy.

The front office has really made a statement on d-line this offseason. Have we added 5 players there now?

This fits the pattern of guys we get who do one thing well, requiring our coach to put them in the right scheme and situations to let them kill it.

Red Bryant: He'll never be a pass rusher but stonewalls the runs.
Jesse Williams: Red-lite. Not a pass rusher, takes up a lot of space, strong, gets in the backfield and disrupts running lanes.
Bruce Irvin: Never be stout on the edge against the run, but can bring the pass rush.

The Hawks don't always do the one-trick-pony thing, Jordan Hill for example is a more complete Dlineman, but Schneid seems to have a good sense to also snag those pieces that Pete will know how to arrange out there for best results.

Hey you gotta be smart like that unless you can stack your roster with years of first rounders like the niners were able to do by virtue of underperforming for a decade.

Wow we're going to have TON of options on the Dline for once. If Red's foot bothers him, if any of the other guys have an owie, next man up.

This guy sounds great. Very cerebral. 2 Gap is his best trait. He can bench 600 lbs??

Man I wanted this pick when we took Hill so as I mentioned earlier I really love this pick now. Williams on 1st-2nd down and than Hill for passing downs, I like it. One question though, for those in the know, is Williams good at pressuring the QB as well or better as a 2 down player as I envisioned earlier?

From analysis I have heard a 2 Gap run stuffing guy. He says he can play the 1, 3 or 5. Big double teamed space eater. Certainly powerful with A 600 lb bench. Used at the one by Alabama came from Australia. Junior college transfer. 2 title rings. Has played rugby. Knee injury.

Could well be. If his knee is already healthy, he has all summer for conditioning and learning. A lot of guys were high on him well earlier than what we got him, even as high as the second round. This was a very well played move by the front office.

I still love the fact that we traded in front of ourselves to take him. They clearly wanted two players at that one pick so they decided that they should move up to get both Williams and Simon.

This is an excellent pick. He could have played in a 3-4, but in this defense he could dominate like Dana Stubblefield did for a few years in it.

My number one wish in this draft was to get better and more dynamic at DT. Mission accomplished.

He'll have the chance to compete for Branch's old role and get a ton of reps. An upgrade at that spot would be huge for our defense.

So glad we got a big body in to replace Branch. He hasn't had quite the football upbringing others have so he perhaps has even more room to grow. Lot's of potential and a good combination pick with Hill. Really happy with our DT situation now - was so worried before the draft but now we've got:

Mebane
Bennett
Hill
Williams
Scruggs
Howard
McDonald

all to fight it out for rotation. Lot's of potential there to mix and match and create real headaches for Offenses. I think in preseason our Defense is going to be real fun to watch.

Here's Doug Farrar's pre-draft write-up on him. Has some pretty glowing praise.

I believe that Jesse Williams was the Seahawks' best pick of the 2013 draft. Absolute steal where they got him in the 5th round. I think he could have 2005 Marcus Tubbs' type of impact. He fell because of injury concerns (knee). I was reading an article about him in Seattle Times paper. His size, demeanor, etc remind me of Marcus Tubbs. However, I hope he has a longer and healthier career than Tubbs did. When Tubbs was able to play, he was a terror and had impact. He just didn't play much.

Hey All, first time poster from Australia here. Obviously the drafting of Jessie is big news here and I can tell you that this guy is MASSIVE and a freak of an athlete for his size.
Finger crossed his knees can hold up to the big time, if so this will be the steal of the draft Good luck to Jessie and can't wait for a big year for the mighty Seahawks!

I tried to find some info on this knee issue that he has, but there doesn't seem to be much out there. He didn't miss and games, but apparently missed some off-season/pre-draft stuff. Anyone know what the deal is with his knee? It seems like most "experts" say he would have been a 2nd round pick if it wasn't for his knee issue.

During an interview Jesse said they went in and cleaned it up, no big deal. That sounds like he may have had a torn meniscus which was excised instead of repaired. That may or may not be something to worry about. It could lead to arthritis and pain if he doesn't heal it properly.
