So does this mean that Branch will not be looked at to be re-signed?

I would think we still need a bigger, run-stuffing DT on the line as well. If we can't get Branch back, how about Bennett's old teammate Roy Miller?

Good signing! I also forgot that he was here in pre-season in '09. What a silly cut that was!

Per Walterfootball

"Michael Bennett, DE, Buccaneers. Age: 27. [4 star player]
Signed with Seahawks (1 year, $5 million)

One of the more underrated players in the NFL, Michael Bennett is a solid pass-rusher and a premier run-defender. He plays all three downs and deserves a big contract. "

I would probably give John Schneider gagging, gurgly porn head right now.

Would you really?

You wouldn't? And you call yourself a Seahawks fan.

I think NYCoug would agree with me.

Wholeheartedly. Turns out you were right, Sarlacc. It wasn't quite time for bloodshed after the Avril signing. After the Bennett signing though? NOW it's time!

Michael Bennett - DL - Seahawks
Michael Bennett didn't give the Buccaneers a chance to match his offer from Seattle.
Leading up to free agency, Bennett said he’d give the Bucs an opportunity to match any offer he gets elsewhere. "I just didn’t feel any love from them at all," Bennett said. "And that’s kind of disappointing, because for a team that you put everything you had into for four years to do that, you’re just kind of, ‘OK, whatever.’"

Not sure if this was mentioned already, but Jason Jones signed for just 3 years $9.5 million. Normally you'd ask why Seattle would pass on such a bargain contract, but it appears they were probably in on Bennett at the time.

I wonder if they see Bennett as a Jason Jones type or as more of a pass rushing 5-tech alternative to Red Bryant? Maybe a little of both?

Thats exactly what i was thinking if RED don't show up big this year and Bennett does what RED does or better against the run while also getting 9 sacks or anywhere near that Pete is'nt gonna deny that type of production. so i hope RED is healed up and ready to play becuase this is a make or break season for him in my opinion. If Bennett shines this year i don't think they will let him walk so they could take Red's money and give it to Bennett. I don't think Red gets cut but he would take a big pay cut to stay on the team if this scenario plays out.

I really think they're ready to move Red inside. His biggest problem as a young player was unrefined technique, he couldn't get low enough to get good leverage going against guards and centers who are typically significantly shorter than TEs and tackles, hence they moved him outside where his size matches up well and let him loose. Now with a few years of regular playing it's reasonable to believe he has improved his technique and can be more effective against smaller players - and with interior lineman growing by the year (starting guards in NFC West - Alex Boone - 6'8, Mike Iupati - 6'5, Harvey Dahl - 6'5, Shelley Smith - 6'4, Pat McQuistan - 6'6, Daryn Colledge - 6'4), there's no reason to believe he can't continue to be the 2-down lineman he has been in the past, but now in the interior line.

2 down package - Bennett - Red - Mebane - Clemons
3rd down package - Avril - Bennett - Scruggs/Howard - Irvin

Rotation is the name of the game, you can switch it up however way you want. I think Clemons will be eased back in with a 2 down role after coming back from an ACL tear until he's definitely fully recovered. Right now it appears we can afford to do so.
There is still room for us to hunt down that pocket-collapsing DT to replace Mebane on 3rd down
