The measure would "prohibit lighting up a cigarette, cigar or pipe in condominiums, duplexes and apartment units." Sure, almost everyone in the world save a few chain-smoking Europeans knows smoking is a bad thing, but is that really where we're going with this? It is bad for you, hence illegal. Bear in mind that I really hate smoking, and yes, I understand the concept of smoke permeating others' residences in multi-home dwellings - I've lived in quite a few before - but how far is a step too far?

California is usually the trend setter in the U.S. and maybe the whole world. Maybe those companies that manufacture vaporized cigarets have bought off the politicians. Probably not, because those cigaret companies don't make to much money right?

California is a lost cause in many ways.....Trying to ban people from smoking in their own homes seems something from communist Russia or something. How about a ban on humans that take a way our liberties and freedoms? They must be shipped to China and work in those factories that manufacture cheap goods that they send to the U.S..... A perfect solution if you ask me.

Why not just keep government out of it? If renter's don't want smoking in their building, put it in the rent agreement and enforce it.

Here's the 2 things I think:

1) I think you should be able to do whatever the fuck you want in your own home as long as it isn't harming other people. Smoke, drink, eat, piss, shit whatever. If it threatens the well-being or livelihood of others, if it impedes, imposes or infringes another's rights or safety then legal action should be taken. I can see how smoking in an apartment/condo complex could potentially fit this description.

2) I think the sale of tobacco products should be illegal. I think you should be able to grow and smoke whatever you want, but I think the commercial manufacture and sale of cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco and other tobacco products should be prohibited.

But... but... more regulations and laws!

Agree. This should be the case in places of business as well. The owner of a building should decide if people are allowed to smoke in it or not.

It worries me that the gov is following this mindset of "we know what's best for you". Since when is the government's job to project us from each others' stupidity? Banning the large drink in NY was retarded, and so is this. Hey government, how about doing a little more worrying about protecting us from dangers outside of the country, and let individuals decide for themselves what's best for themselves within it?

I quit smoking about 9-10 years ago now, but believe that people should be allowed to smoke in their homes, cars, bars, and restaurants that choose to allow it.

Smoking bans are the antithesis of freedom, an alien concept in this day and age.

I was a smoker when the ban went into effect here in Washington. At first it was like "businesses should be able to do what they want" but then I realized how shitty it was for the workers and other patrons.

Would love to see a law where children don't have to be exposed to second hand smoke. It fucking irritates me when I see a parent driving with a small child in the car and light up. Kill yourself, I don't give a shit, but don't put that other persons health ahead of yours.

I like the idea of making the sale of cigarettes illegal. Grow your own if you want, create clubs, whatever. I even kind of like how it is with marijuana right now. It's not the easiest to buy (pretty damn easy though) but those who want to get high don't have any worries about being thrown in jail for smoking.

I recall reading a story in the newspaper back when Czechoslovakia threw off the onerous yoke of communism. The story was about how, in the state legislature (whatever they called it there) the air was so thick with cigarette smoke that you could hardly breathe. When asked about this by the Western reporter, the lawmakers replied that smoking indoors was forbidden by the communist dictatorship and they were celebrating their new-found freedom.

Just sayin'.

Why are people so against measures that keep you from harming others? This is exactly like making drunk driving illegal. If it hurts others, ban it.

Because what I want to do is far more important than the general safety and security of everyone else.

I don't have an issue with this at all. I hate the smell of cigarette smoke. The building I live in now has a smoking ban. Well, for cigarettes at least. Refer they don't seem to mind.

Just one more thing bad neighbors are gonna pull out to fuck with each other and waste cops time. Can you imagine how much dispatchers must hate such calls , "My neighbor is smoking again, please send an officer!"?

I just dont understand why the gov needs to be involved in this. If an apartment owner wants to ban smoking in their complex that's fine. Its their private property and people then have the right to live there or not live there based on that info. But why the hell does the gov need to tell us what's best for us to do? Especially when we're talking about in private property.

I'm the typical guy that quit smoking at least 20 years ago and if I was diagnosed with a terminal disease and had 6 months to live I'd buy smokes on the way home. lol

I agree about homes. If apartment owners want to ban smoking in their buildings fine, cause you have the choice to live there or somewhere else. I don't agree with any law that covers current residents and/or people under contract.

In Southern climates you could go out on your bannister and smoke unless they decided put a 25' limit to smoking by a door.

I remember when public non smoking went into effect in Washington State and contrary to the hand wringings of tavern owners their business has actually grown in many cases cause there were those such as me that didn't do taverns because of the smoke.

I smoked for years...quit once for 7 years and started again and understand the smoking habit. However I couldn't afford to smoke now. Hell when I was in the Coast Guard you could buy a carton of Pall Malls for a dollar,,,,,yes 10 cents a pack. Luckys were .80 a carton

In later young life you could buy cigs in a machine. Put in a quarter and your pack would have a nickel taped to it for your change. Hard to believe now.

I don't mind to much unless its really trapped in a room. My wife is just the opposite. If you smoke you are the devil incarnate and that's that. Never remembers that she was just like that.

Smokes now,,,soon they will restrict sex to days of the week with the letter R in them. And you'll only be able to order delivery pizza once a week. Take out will be limited at twice a week.

It should be stipulation of the rental contract if the owner does not want you smoking in their building not the governments.

I believe if you OWN the building you can do whatever the hell you want, but the sticky part would be a condo that is owned by you that shares a common wall with another owner.

Go electric...problem solved :D

Don't agree with your ultra conservative viewpoints much, but if this is true I agree. It's one of the biggest problems I have with the left, they have this "we have to save people from themselves mentality! As a nonsmoker I agree with the smoking ban in public buildings, but if people want to smoke in their own homes that's their business!
