OMG!!! A PRACTICING MUSLIM!!!

Quote:
The Kansas City Chiefs need help all over the place and hope safety Husain Abdullah can lend a hand.

Abdullah -- a practicing Muslim -- was signed Monday after sitting out last season to speak at mosques across the nation before making a pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

OK, so how come it isn't "Tim Tebow, a PRACTICING CHRISTIAN, has an uncertain future in the NFL...", or "practicing Christian Colin Kaepernic threw for..."; seriously NFL?

OK, so I get that he's going to Mecca, but this just seems a bit odd they go out of their way to mention it, and I, as a fan, could care less about player's religious pilgrimages or religions at all. Isn't it enough he was signed and by who for what?

... You didn't link the full article and yet I can still say that it goes on to say that he sat out last season to speak at mosques across the nation... Therefore having an affect on his football career.

If I was a Kansas City fan I would definitely care about his religious pilgrimages because it could mean that he may very well sit out another year to speak at mosques across the country once again, leaving his team high and dry. They didn't go out of their way to mention it, it took a year out of his football career.

Doh, the link was too big and shiny for me to see

But yea, it has a lot to do with the article, since it shows what he was doing last year while not playing football. If Tebow sat out a year to speak at christian youth groups across the country, I'm pretty sure they'd mention him being christian.

Well considering they did reference that he sat out last season to speak at mosques directly after that I hardly see a problem with the statement... besides maybe the "practicing" part.

Got your panties in a bunch on this one, the fact is actually important to the story.

There was a HUGE deal made about Tebow's religious beliefs while he was in Denver and then again when he was traded to the Jets. For once I agree with Sonic, your panties are in a bunch.

Well I see now that yes it is more relevant than at first glance, but a part of it was that when I first saw the headline, it had ONLY the part about the Chiefs signing him, his name and that he was a "practicing Muslim" and no other info.

That's the funny thing about headlines - they tend to contain a very short tease of what's in the actual article, generally only a few words.

I wish there was some way we could get Texas out of the union.

Maybe someone could start an online petition or something.

I'd say it's appropriate to mention his religion when he chose randomly speaking about his religion over his team - his employer who had him under contract.

What the hell do you guys think your employer would say if you wanted to take a leave of absence to go talk about your religion, when you couldn't do your job without being there and your company depended on you in a way that wasn't easily replaced? Most bosses would give something like an "Are you serious?" look, and your career with that company would be killed right then and there without a word being said.

If a Mormon NFL player had left the league to go on a mission and returned, I'm sure they would mention his Mormonism too. Some people are religious but don't attend church, the fact this guy left his job and went to the Middle East pretty much makes logical sense to distinguish between "a Muslim" and "a practicing muslim" as the two can be quite different things.

In his defense, Roland, if he just signed Monday, then he wasn't under contract. KC may have drafted him last year, but if he chose not to sign, he didn't have to. Granted, he can't play anywhere else until his draft obligation is up (4 years IIRC) so he had to go back to KC to sign when he finally decided to play.

But it's not like he held out or something. Maybe technically, but he didn't violate the terms of a contract that hadn't been signed yet.

I thought Abdullah played for Minnesota a few years back? He wasn't a rookie.
