So half of Europe is now embroiled in a scandal over putting horse meat into foodstuffs labeled as beef. I get the false labeling angle, I really do. That's a bad road to go down, because there are more issues at stake than just hey, we put a different animal inside this package of deliciousness than what we told you.

But what I don't get is the horrible outrage that it's horse meat. That horse meat is somehow the end-all, be-all of disgusting and vile foods. Why? It's served as regular fare in several countries. I've eaten it several times before, and have actually gone out of my way in Italy to hunt down a restaurant that serves it, just so I can have a horse steak. They're delicious. Imagine beef, but with the bland taste replaced by an earthy taste reminiscent of grain and newly baled hay.

What's our obsession over which animals are edible and which are somehow banned as foods. Horse meat is banned in the U.S., and there is really no good reason I know of. It's a barnyard animal. Its main diet is the same as that of the cow, the sheep, and the pig, all of which we eat readily. It's certainly a religious thing among some circles, but then, the pig is even more so, and it's absolutely celebrated in its delicious goodness.

What gives? What makes one of these animals so frickin' sacred?

Alligator's pretty good. There's a pizza joint in Portland called Pizza Schmizza that serves Alligator sausage on pizza and Cajun-style pasta. It's quite awesome.

I have a co-worker that grew up in Mexico. He would often take trips to a seedy, small town that had a single restaurant. He told me he would always order the horse meat, that way he knew he was at least eating dog.

People seem to look upon Horses as pets, friends and companions maybe?

Alligator's bomb. So's yak. I'm sure horse is tasty, I assume any burger from a fast food restaurant contains at least some percentage of horse meat and/or "other".

I don't have a problem using horse meat... however it should be absolutely positively labeled as such.

I think many people have such a positive feeling towards horses that it's hard for us to accept eating their big faces. I don't really care, I've lost enough money at Emerald Downs (maybe $100) to want to eat every horse I see.

Back in the day, horses were a primary mode of transportation, and they were also used for performing heavy work around a farm. When a family was so hungry that they had to slaughter the family horse to consume it, they were pretty much on the skids. I believe that is primarily where the source of this horse meat ban comes from. There is a public perception that horses, like cats and dogs, are companion animals, not livestock to be rendered into food. It's all a matter of perception, conditioning, and history, rather than a health risk.
