In case you've been in a news vacuum this morning, a dumptruck-sized meteor struck Russia. It was mostly an air burst, and no one was killed, but about 500 folks (so far) have been injured by the destruction caused by the sonic boom.

I saw that on my google page when I first logged in this morning. I hadn't read it completely yet. I assume this meteor is perhaps a drifter from the asteroid that was supposed to be passing by this part of the solar system today?

Also, I finally did go read about it, and they say it was just a coincidence and had nothing to do with the asteroid scheduled to pass by.

Posted some thoughts on my blog about this event as well as the 2012 DA14 asteroid which is passing by the earth today. It has a couple of the better clips I've found on the event. You can also check out NASA's live footage on DA14 here: http://www.ustream.tv/nasajpl2. It's totally unrelated to the Russian meteor, by the way, traveling the opposite direction.

Nobody was killed. So far, they're reporting over a thousand people were injured, mostly from broken glass and building debris from the sonic boom.

It apparently did have an impact site, although most of it was a fireball that exploded in the atmosphere and never reached Earth.

Some astronomers are saying It was a follower. They are chunks of asteroids that proceed or follow the asteroid itself. Very impressive display.

There may be some followers associated with that asteroid, but this one wasn't one of them. According to everything I've seen, including straight from NASA, it's not. One traveled North-South in relation to the earth, and the other traveled South-North, thus they were traveling in opposite directions. Also, since the earth is hurling around the sun at 67,000 miles per hour, and the two events are approximately 14 hours apart - the impact of the meteor in Russia and the closest point of the asteroid - this would put the earth at about 938,000 miles away from where the meteor hit when the asteroid went by.

Why are people out after the thing streaks across the sky and then a couple minutes later there are big explosions?
You can't explain that.

Glad no one was killed, but excited that I can finally believe the official explanation for the Tunguska Event.
They said if that asteroid were to strike it would have been similar in scope to Tunguska. Bad news if something like that hit a populated area, but not a planet killer at least.
