Thanks to Sailor for the link. This guy better be fired. The New York Times is the golden standard for journalism, and if they don't come down on him quickly and decisively for this, (assuming the logs are legitimate, which they sure seem to be) then their image is going to suffer in a big way.

This guy has a serious axe to grind. What a pro-big oil piece of shit. I'm a huge fan of electric vehicles, and wish we would subsidize them heavily along with a huge push for charging stations. If we're going to piss away gazillions on stuff every year regardless, we might as well do it for things that will greatly benefit us down the road.

Does anybody here own a Tesla S, or know someone who does that could speak to these claims in terms of their own Tesla S experience?

Broder did say that they had driven it on the west coast and and gave it rave reviews. He was doing a review, initially, on the charging network, not the car. Maybe that one model had a bad battery or something else wrong that affected it, or something wrong with their actual charging stations. Regardless, I think both sides are being a bit too pissy about the whole ordeal. Also, until they get the charging times down, they won't be that popular for cross country trips and therefore not even close to a mainstream option.

Bottom line here is, one party is flat-out lying. The question is, do you think it's Tesla lying and modifying logs from the car, or the journalist?

I'm biased towards Tesla since I *humblebrag* spent about 8 weeks there last year training their CAD users, but let's face it, the dude made it up and got caught when Tesla looked at the computer logs. I'm guessing they did so because they wanted to figure out what was wrong with the car, initially.

Yes. In all honesty I could care less who is lying. They still need to make it so that it doesn't take so long to charge that a family of four could take one from California to Florida on vacation.

It's $100k if you want the full range. $50k is basically the around town starter model. They are going to have to lower prices a lot before they become mainstream.

Reporter was playing fast and loose with the facts it appears, but it also appears that the CEO of Tesla is a bit too thin skinned for his own good and overreacted.

Saw on CNN today when I was working out that one of their guys had done the exact same test, and made the whole drive no problem. Said it might have been slightly slower a drive than with a gasoline-powered vehicle, but the drive was a complete success. Sounds like the NYT guy was lying out his ass. And I'd have reacted the same damn way Tesla's CEO did. Someone blatantly tries to make your product look like a piece of shit by intentionally distorting facts and making up bullshit about it? Absolutely. Dude should be fired from journalism in general.

CEO of a company should keep themselves above the fray and hire minions to do their dirty work. It makes him look thin skinned and petty to get involved in a public spat with a reporter who probably makes 900 bucks a week. Big boss handbook 101 type stuff.

Regardless of what the truth may be, all-electric vehicles are just not ready for prime time. Less than a 300 mile range with a 50 minute charge time, at one of their proprietary charge stations no less, is simply ridiculous. In order for them to be viable we need a major quantum leap forward in energy storage technology, and lithium based batteries are not that solution due to the way they ignite and/or explode when damaged.

I doubt that there would be many people who think that electric vehicles, when everything finally clicks, is a bad idea. Well...maybe not that reporter.

Unfortunately infrastructure isn't possible on it's own. There has to be a lot of federal/state help. Someone has to invest in this and even Bill Gates doesn't have enough cash for it.
