Based on the Falcons game it's obvious the Hawks need to upgrade the DL/DE positions. Never realized how important Clemons was to them until that game. Irvin is not ready to fill that role. Yes, did a great job as a pass rush specialist and I love the pick but we need depth. Plus Branch & Jason Jones are free agents. Some key free agent names I see out there that I'd love to see the Seahakws try to pick up: 1. Henry Melton DT (Bears): Odds are he will resign with Chicago but the guy is a beast. 2. Randy Starks DT (Miami): Anyone who watched the Seahawks/Dolphins game saw what he can do. 3. Michael Johnson DE (Cinci): He reminds me of Clemons with a motor that doesn't quit. 4. Osi Umenyiora DE (G-Men): He has some gas left in the tank and could give the team 2 solid years kind of like Kierny & Winstrom did years ago. 5. Michael Bennett DE (Tampa): Another high motor guy like Clemons.
I would love to see Seattle get 1 if not 2 of the players on this list. One name I'm intrugued by is Glen Dorsey. Bust in KC but does well vs the run. Depending on what his salary will be could get a decent player on the low. Maybe he needs Pets's rah rah coaching to get his but in gear.

One question: Why is no one talking about us re-signing Jason Jones. Our pass rush definitely dropped when he got hurt and I think he should be one of the guys we have in our rotation of pass rushers.

Yes, he made an impact when he was on the field, but he does us no good if he's on the sidelines.

You are corect, Jones is an option but would you rather have Starks, Melton, or Jones?

Alan Branch also had a monster game in Washington and looked to be very promising. I think we should keep building up mainly through the draft, People right now are saying "we have a huge cap space" but the reality is in a few more years we are going to have to pay Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Bobby Wagner, Okung, Unger And Russell Wilson the big bucks. I think keep getting cheap players through the draft and save up to pay our established super stars.

Jones is good, but he isn't the type of beast pocket collapser we could really use. He doesn't draw double teams, and ideally what you want is a huge 3-tech that can eat up blocks and free up the edge guys - all the while collpasing the pocket himself. Jones is more of a hybrid DE type that uses his quickness. I think our D would be much better with a guy like Starks or Melton.

Michael Bennett pops out to me. Probably because he was a Seahawk before he went to the Bucs. Bennett is only 27 so there are many good years ahead of him too. He's not going to warrant the type of contract Osi and Freeney do. So he may be a better value (dollars and longevity). Defintely would upgrade the pass rush.

Jones wouldn't help us on the sideline but Osi wouldn't either.

I don't get the Starks are Osi ideas. They are both older. We should be focusing on younger free agents. I like Bennett too and remember liking him during that pre-season, before he was cut and ended up with the BUCS.
I'd much rather have Bennett, Bryant and Michael Johnson, Than Starks, Osi, due to age and Melton (Due to him probably being too expensive)
I wouldn't bring back Branch or Jones, unless we find out in Fall camp we need then and they are still available.

The reason to look for older DL in free agency is simple, we have two years of cap space before our young guys need to get paid and it takes two to three years for a DL you get in the draft to start producing.
when you combine those two facts you can see that Seattle should definitely be bringing in at least two DE/TE that are willing to be here for two years and not more.
Everybody is saying we should draft DL in first round, I have to disagree. You are not going to get an impact player that late. We should be looking at one of the best two TE or one of the best four LB as our first pick, they can come in and produce right away. Then use later pick on developmental DL prospects that will be ready in two years.

Jones is more of a hybrid DE type that uses his quickness. I think our D would be much better with a guy like Starks or Melton. My brutha... you just described the ideal ONE-tech. In a pass rushing scenario, you want the 1-tech (who lines up between the strong side guard and the center on the G's inside shoulder) rushes the A gap, drawing the center and the guard to double team him. Then you want your opposite side DE, the weak side DE (the Leo in our scheme) to be a speed rushing threat around the outside to draw all of the weak side tackle's attention. that leaves your THREE technique (who lines up on the outside shoulder of the weak side guard) in a 1 on 1 situation with the weak side guard in the B gap as the center and the tackle on the weak side are off chasing other priorities. Drawing double teams and pushing the pile back through brute force is the ONE tech's job. Ideally you want the THREE tech to have a very fast first step and some pass rushing moves so he can win that 1 on 1 matchup up the middle, which is where Jason Jones succeeds. The 5 tech plays the B and C gap on the strong side (with support from the Mike and the SS playing up almost in the box in our scheme) which is why he needs to be huge with long arms like Red. Mebane does a good job as the 1 tech drawing double teams and pushing them back with his crazy strength. Jones does a fantastic job as a pass rushing 3-tech, but lacks the mass to plug the B gap against the run, which is why they need to rotate him and Branch. If we could somehow combing Jones and Branch, you'd have the prototypical 3 tech DT.... come to think of it, that guy would look a lot like Suh.

But, Bennett is long gone. Michael Bennett is coming off his best year ever and logged 89% of his teams defensive snaps. Teams notice that kind of productivily and this is his Bennett's opportunity to land a big contract. I doubt he is under the radar anymore. In any case, his agent will be working to encourage a bidding war.

Has a little more meat on his bones than JJ too so he might even be a 3 down guy when all is said and done. I really like what JJ brings too, but that knee concerns me.

I'm curious about Jaye Howard and why Dan Quinn was so insistent on the Seahawks drafting the young man. Now that Quinn is in Seattle ..... perhaps we will find out.
