Of course what I want would require way too much thought and cooperation from both citizens and both idiot parties, so it's not going to happen anytime soon [or ever].

It's kinda funny that we both want the same thing in the end. I would love to live in a world without any firearm at all. However, I think that governments would need to disarm before that was ever a possibility. I don't even own a gun, but I will support any law-abiding citizens right to own a firearm if they wish, because it is a great equalizer as Sailors post pointed out. "Assault rifles" are a protection against tyranny, as a hand gun is a protection against a rape, murder, or robbery. The death toll is horrendous, but I will point out a great quote "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will own guns."

NRA thinks if you give one cartridge back you're giving up to much. I don't. The art of compormise is long gone. No one wants to work with others to find solutions that work for everyone. They are all to busy screaming...MY WAY OR NOTHING! including the NRA.

:les:

This is a good assessment. Even hinting at compromise is showing weakness. Political parties now have to always look tough to pander to their respective bases.

The issue for many isn't that "compromise shows weakness," it's that fixating on guns is not the issue. The difference between reloading between magazines, or having 10 vice 7 shots in a magazine, or whatever, is all a bunch of hulabaloo about the wrong thing. The issue isn't the tool used, it's the fact that people are murdering others. And the way it's politicized, both sides are focusing on the wrong damn thing, and using an instance like Sandy Hook to promote their misguided stances.

If the guy had run over a bunch of kids in the crosswalk, in a stolen car, would we be talking about making it more difficult to purchase automobiles and trying to ban high end sports cars? Because let's face it, there's no earthly reason why anyone should need to drive a Maserati or Lamborghini. Those things are essentially death traps on wheels anyway, designed to break the speed limit and endanger people's lives.

It's idiotic to think this would be a discussion. That's because the car has nothing to do with the fact that this asshole just killed a bunch of folks. And politicizing it further, trying to make it harder to legally obtain a firearm when he didn't obtain his legally does nothing to help anyway. And the fact he may or may not have used the rifle is a pretty wild jump of logic when trying to ban "assault weapons". That'd be like wanting to ban sports cars because the guy had a stolen Ferrari in his garage when he ran over a bunch of people in his buddy's Honda.

This whole discussion sounds completely stupid when applied to cars, knives, or whatever else someone might use to kill people. But suddenly it's logical when it applies to a different tool used?

It's not compromise, folks, it's misguided focus on the wrong issue.

Oh, and this is just one more example of the complete and total abuse of this issue to drive partisan agenda:

You really want to get to in a war of posting gun stories? You lose that one.

She is, and so is yours. :th2thumbs:

Ok, let's take a different spin on this problem. Instead of banning guns, how about if anyone commits a crime while using a gun, punishment is an automatic life-imprisonment (or in certain states, automatic death penalty). I bet you less gun-related crimes would happen then.

It's not an escalation, its semantics.

Your saying that a 125 lbs. woman who doesn't want to harm anyone against a 200 lbs. man who wants to harm her doesn't need some form of "escalation"?

Seriously? You want me to post news stories of people being murdered by guns?

If only guns were banned in Chicago, oh wait they pretty much are. Can't believe those strict gun laws didn't solve that homicide or any of the 500 homicides last year.

Yeah, and if guns were legal this wouldn't have happened?

Nice try though.

You really can't argue against law abiding citizens having guns because CRIMINALS cause harm to law abiding citizens with guns can you?

Here’s a 14 year old kid protecting himself and his sister against a home invasion................those evil guns.

I'm not even for gun bans but that's stupid. You can't ban guns and then overnight expect them to disappear. It will take a long, long time for that to happen. Banning guns is more an illusory step forward with an eye on the distant future. Especially when certain cities or states try to ban guns, they are just going to get bused in from out of state. Wait until every gun is banned in every state and wait about 200 years and there will probably be an improvement. Complain about it though and act flippant when a talented 15 year old dies. That's helpful.

That 15 year old girl wouldn't have died if the gang was in a knife fight. Because knives don't fly through the air at 700 mph.

I think the point is that even with the strict gun laws that Chicago has, the city is still one of if not the worst cities for gun violence. The strict gun laws didn't work, if anything they made it worse. Find a better solution.

Guns aren't exactly hard to get right now. "Banning" them in a single municipality doesn't do much.
