The thing is, the requirement is for the insurance companies to provide the services and products. The religion only contracts to the insurance companies. Why should they decide, other than some ridiculous power grab?

The issue is between the insurance companies and the patients, the church shouldn't even be involved, except to preach and teach their acolytes to adhere to their rules. They should have no power over a secular business-the insurers-over what services they cover.

If they can't keep their own believers in line to follow their rules, why should they be able to petition government help to do so?

In your libertarian fantasy world, maybe. I live in the real world, and government regulates and mandates that businesses do lots of things. They shouldn't mandate that a company follow religious doctrine, though.

The Supreme Court overturned a ruling banning ritualistic animal slaughtering awhile back. The reasons being it was not (under guidelines) cruelty to animals and a ban did nothing to further protect the public health (if performed out of sight of public). The 1st Amendment protects religious freedoms and should be upheld. However, birth control is a matter that does protect the public health and therefore should be deemed constitutional.

The government should not have complete power over religion nor vice versa. Public health should come first.

Once we realize the Constitution is nothing more than a sadly outdated document created in the days of bigotry and racism, and religion is simply an opiate for the uneducated proletariat, we can end our stubborn, self-willed exile and join the blissful dream that is now offered us in this enlightened age.

Whoa...I thought you were a Republican? I completely agree, by the way, but I really never thought I'd read this from you.

Yeah, word Sailor. The constitution was written in a LESS religious time. And, most of its authors loathed and feared religion as an influence to government.

I thought Sailor was being overtly sarcastic by using Marxist/Orwellian language to show how those preaching tolerance while ignoring the constitution are sheep being promised an unrealistic "blissful dream." Am I wrong, or is everyone being sarcastic, what's going on?!

Nah your right, he was being sarcastic. The constitution is there to protect our rights from the government, but people tend to think its the government granting us rights that are no longer necessary. It's kinda funny though that the whole "enlightenment" thing is entirely possible if we got rid of the monetary system. We have the technological side almost ready for a complete switch, but our mindsets are still a century behind our technology.

Unfortunately, that's too "Utopian". People don't believe its possible to live in a world without government interference to keep everyone from turning into ravening monsters. (and in a lot of cases they are still right)

Until that "blissful dream" is here I'll stand with the constitution thanks.

The constitution is not there to protect our rights... let's stop pretending that. The constitution is a fucking document not an armed brigade.

You're right. It's there to enumerate and guarantee our rights. It's up to we, the people afforded said rights, to defend it.
