Kind of reminds me of that scene in Evolution, where they drop a match on the alien organism.
I wonder if this demonstration was where they got the idea.

Back before the local tribes sold good fireworks, all you could get was 'safe and sane' around here. One of the 'fireworks' sold in those packages was called Snakes. It was a pellet of black stuff about the size of the end of your pinky, and when it was lit a black thing would emerge just like in video #1. I wondered why I hadn't seen one for so long - if they were made with mercury and cyanide, that would explain it!
