What about Asians? Or Blasians? It's proportionate to how famous the people are. I'd be happy to give 1T of taxpayer dollars to save Morgan Freeman or Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, but wouldn't give $20 to save the fry cook at the local McDonalds. It's all about perceived value to society. Simples.

To flip this on its head, how about giving money to END specific people's lives?

I mean, we already do that, but I think we the people need more say on who our government kills. Quit focusing on terrorism so damn much, Washington, and consider a little Kardashiancide.

What if we used science, technology, common sense, integrity, and legislative cooperation to make our country as safe as possible with the budget it is working with?

What's a budget and how does it apply to legislative cooperation?

I could see this working. There was an episode of classic Doctor Who called 'Vengence on Varos', sixth doctor - not great. Anyway, in this episode, the citizens vote on any new legislation by pressing a 'yes' or 'no' button on their TV when things come up for vote. the president (or whatever) is inflicted with some kind of pain-inducing torture if the 'no' votes win, eventually leading to his death after enough unsuccessful votes. With modern technology, we could apply a similar system hear in the states. If a public figure annoys enough people, then we put it to a simple yes/no vote on whether or not they should live. Simples.

This is turning into a technology-enhanced modern take on stoning. Yay mob mentality! And with the popularity of the Kardashians et. al., I fear they'll get the 'yes' votes, while the greatest minds of our time will get the 'no' votes. At that rate, we'll arrive at the future predicted in Idiocracy in no time at all.

I'm scared to know what a few people on this forum think about the OP's question in their heart of hearts, but are too smart to potentially admit on the forum.

Human life is just not very valuable. Yes, I just said that; and you know what? The facts are on my side. If we actually valued human life, and not just those we know/care about, there wouldn't be a billion+ people living in poverty around the world. How many people here sponsor a child in another country for $20/month or whatever it costs?

Everyone will claim they value human life, but there's little evidence to support that assertion.

Well, yea. 'Cause when you figure out just how much someone is worth, you know exactly how much they aren't worth.

Right there with you. Life has always been cheap. We sensationalize it, and make much ado about it, especially in situations like the recent school shooting, but when push comes to shove, it's all acting for the silver screen. Thousands die every time we flip the channel to something more interesting and nobody gives a damn. Unless there's money, a means to a cause, or sensationalism in it.

There have been two - very similar - songs written about that sentiment: Live and Let Live, and Live and Let Die. Both are equally accurate.

Monetarily, life is worth nothing, because life is more valuable than money.

Again, there is little evidence to support this. People get killed for the wallet in their pocket all the time. CEOs outsource work to other countries to save money regularly, lowering the quality of life for our own citizens.

That's just negativity talking, and it doesn't consider reality.

The Kardashians aren't popular because people LIKE them. They're popular in the same way that Jersey Shore was popular. It was a bunch of people tuning in to go, "Look at these idiots. WTF is wrong with them?! LOL!" You'd be sorely mistaken if you didn't think that there are PLENTY of folks out there who would love to at least torture these fools.

As for the "greatest minds of our time," no, they won't get 'no' votes. Because no one in America knows who they are. They'll never even come up for a vote.

Semantics, but it'd be "life is worth everything" in the above sentence. You're saying life is invaluable, which means it's priceless - more valuable than anything.

Too bad that's not the case.

I still wouldn't take the Kardashians in a dead pool in that scenario. For every vote from someone who hates them, there's probably two from those who can't get enough of them. And you're assuming all those folks who tune in to go "Look at these idiots. WTF is wrong with them?! LOL!" would vote them dead instead of voting them to live so they could keep watching the train wreck.

People love a good train wreck. I agree with your sentiment on the greatest minds, though.

Funny you say that, because I was thinking of semantics when I wrote that. Life is worth nothing monetarily, money from life insurance policies, etc. go to pay bills and support your family you have left behind or in the case of law suits, money is paid for the cost of unneeded suffering for family and friends. Money should not be viewed as a payout for life under any circumstance, to suggest a cost trade out simply implies that life CAN be valued monetarily when that is not the case.

So....you're down with my Vengence on Varos idea? Brilliant! I'll get Pehawk to work on a prototype formula for what is certain to be the highest rated television show of all time, ever.
