I mean, clearly, every member of the Saudi royal family needs one. Or two. How can a billionaire playboy have any respect if he has to use his brother's custom jumbo jet?

I mean, whether that's true or not, 8 cents a gallon profit is actually a crapload of money. 55 gallons to a barrel, millions of barrels a day, that adds up to.......y'know, a lot.

Doesn't sound so far-fetched to me when you consider the cost of production and the massive taxes on gasoline and stuff. still ridiculous. I've no sympathy for the oil companies whatsoever.

Well of course, they don't tolerate environmentalists blocking development over there. It's free flowing. We could stop being reliant on middle east oil in 10 years or so if we put our minds to it, but that won't happen as long as we have the environmentalists suing at every new drill operation and pipeline proposed in this country.

Dollars to donuts when we really run low on oil a new technology will be released that allows travel without the use of crude oil. The timing will be perfect because the patent already exists and is waiting for such an occasion.

We already have this, it's called "nuclear power", and your liberal BFFs spend billions blocking new plants from being built.

Ah yes, the hubris of the broke and/or underemployed.

The margin on gas is about 8% for the oil companies. It's hardly highway robbery. They make tons of money because they sell tons of product and are highly diversified conglomerates heavily vested in the services sector as well.

You are both right, Don't believe that 8% garbage. They make a lot more than that. Oil companies couldn't get a away with gouging though, unless you want to call gouging greater increase in supply and no desire to increase production.

Interesting chart:

http://energyalmanac.ca.gov/gasoline/margins/index.php

and opinion:

http://jb-williams.com/4-25-06.htm

"Who is getting rich at the gas pumps?

For starters, many average Americans who hold stock in the oil companies, either directly or indirectly through their 410k or mutual fund. But the fact is, the gross profit margin for a gallon of gas in America today, is what it has always been, on average, .08 cents per gallon, (2.5% at $3.00 per gallon). Though retail gas prices fluctuate with crude prices and supply vs. demand, the gross profit margin per gallon remains roughly the same at all times. (No evidence of price gouging here.)

However the federal government profits approximately .59 cents per gallon through gasoline taxes, 7 ½ times or 750% that of the oil producers themselves and 20% of the price at the pumps. Pay attention here, Washington liberals are attacking oil companies for their 2.5% gross profit margin, while Washington is profiting 20% per gallon. Democrats answer? Tax some more?

If oil companies cut their profit margins by 50%, it would drop the price of a gallon of gas by only .04 cents per gallon. If Washington law makers cut their take by 50%, gasoline would cost .30 cents per gallon less. If the federal government didn’t tax gasoline at all, the price per gallon at the pumps would be $2.40 per gallon instead of $3.00 per gallon and the oil companies would still be at a respectable 2.5% gross profit margin. Who is gouging whom?"

Well that sucks. I'm paying $9 in taxes everytime I fill up my gas tank. That seems way too high.

Washington's state tax added with the Federal tax is is $0.559/gal. This is all from Wikipedia.

Quote:
Then-Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters stated on August 15, 2007 that about 60% of federal gas taxes are used for highway and bridge construction. The remaining 40% goes to earmarked programs.[5] However, revenues from other taxes are also used in federal transportation programs.

Chevron, Exxon, BP and Shell all are in the top ten in the world in profit.

These companies don't need tax breaks to operate and grow, regardless of the percentage.

How much would you like a 4% raise?

I'd love that. It'd perfectly make up for the tax hit I just got.

How about if we took some of those breaks we gave those poor oil companies and gave it to teachers and the school systems? Seems like a better solution than letting them stockpiling money.
