Gotta love the NRA and its supporters for lobbying for the decriminalization of all illicit drugs...oh wait...

Bitches, please. I don't like the NRA. I'm not a member now, nor have I ever been.

I just think most of the people that want tighter gun control laws are idiots, and don't understand the real problems with gun violence.

You think limiting access to guns isn't part of the solution?

Being able to fire off 20, 30, 40 rounds or more in a matter of seconds is certainly a problem. But I don't think any particular laws would be able to keep that from happening. The problem is that we're humans, some of us are totally fucked up, and at some point we felt the need to design weapons that could do that. It's our own fault and there's no real chance at stopping it. Avoid the malls, schools, churches & movie theaters if you're scared enough to do so. Otherwise, go on with your life and hope for the best. I fear it is an unsolvable problem.

I was gonna start the gun thread earlier today but didn't really have enough solid info to convince myself to through with it.

I hate guns. I do. Don't know why. I've just never been able to get into them. I even hunted when I was younger, though I never actually took a shot at an animal. I don't think that any kind of ban is going to fix anything, and I honestly believe it's a good thing for people to have guns in case of the situation where we need to protect ourselves against a foreign or domestic enemy. But I also don't think the (Roland's?) ridiculous idea of arming all citizens would fix anything either. These mass shootings we're growing accustomed to are virtually unstoppable. We created these weapons and now we have to live with them.

Outstanding post.

And I'm fairly sure it's Smokin who holds the opinion that if you're not armed to the fucking teeth at all times, you're being irresponsible.

If someone is truly gone far enough down some ugly path where they have decided they are going to kill someone, they are going to do it.

Be it with an illegal firearm, a legal one, a knife, baseball bat, poison or even their bare hands.

As much as Prohibition was.

Prohibition caused a 30-40% decrease in alcohol consumption.

What I really fear from all this is a crackdown on security measures (once again). At some point, I have a feeling a smattering of malls and theaters and the like are going to start acting like airports - mandatory metal detection.

I'm for owning guns for personal protection. I am also in favor of tightening the loopholes on gaining access to guns. Straw man purchasing at gun shows is a main source for illegal trafficking. Make background checks required for every gun purchase, even if its a one-time thing from a private owner.

To back Zeb up though, countries with lower gun violence and tighter gun control like Great Britain, Japan, and France also have much higher knife crime rates. So we can take away the guns but the violence won't necessarily decrease.

I'll take my chances vs any of those other options.

Limiting access to guns will fix the problem like limiting access to spoons will curb obesity. It is very obvious that limiting gun access will NOT fix anything. How do you plan to limit the access? If you're talking about street violence, the vast majority of those guns are illegally obtained as it is. There will be no effect there. 2/3rds (67.5) of all murders in the U.S. are perpetrated using a firearm, which means a 3rd are done via other means; you limit access to firearms, you'll just see more murders with things like knives.

Here's another example. How well does limiting access to marijuana prevent people from smoking it in the 48 states where it's currently illegal? ...Yeah.

@Sarlacc: Actually, the line of thinking is that drinking stayed the same or possibly even increased, but since it was impossible to track accurate stats for it during prohibition, nobody knows. Common vices that are made illegal gain even more appeal for some people.

@Zeb: What the fuck? Where did I say I wanted to arm everybody? Dude, don't put words in my mouth that I never said, lol. I support everyone's right to own firearms, I didn't say (and don't think) every single person should own firearms. Damn.

Unless someone believes that all citizens should have access to tanks, SAMs, and nuclear weapons, we are all for gun control. Now the argument is where to draw the line.

Prohibition also caused much more crime than the limitation of the booze prevented - violent, vicious and organized crime. As opposed to the simple assault which was probably the most commonly prevented by limiting access to alcohol. Further, booze is consumed, firearms are persistent. You can't just ban them today and expect 150 years of modern firearms production to evaporate.

There is no 'gun show loophole' - background checks are required for any purchase from an FFL holding dealer. Certainly there are private sales which don't perform the check, but those are not exclusive to gun shows.

Lets break down the recent Oregon event:

The perp entered someone's home (1) and stole (2) a firearm. He then brought the weapon loaded to a public place (3) discharged a firearm in public (4) and committed assault (5) while threatening (6), ended up committing homicide (7), ignored orders by the police to surrender (8) and committed suicide (whoops - the ATTEMPT is illegal, but not if you are successful). At least 8 violations of the law, and this does not even count the multiple counts of each.

Would one more law be the ONE that made him say "yeah, f all these other laws, but I won't do it because this one law right here..."

Limiting access is a nifty soundbite, but a ban law will have the opposite effect.

In 1994 the Assault weapons ban went into place. At the time, you needed to shell out on the order of $2500 (then year) dollars to get most of the items on that list (a few exceptions, but the AR-15 was certainly there). After the ban, I saw a spike in price, followed by numerous manufacturers working around the ban on technicalities which drove the price down to the $550 you need today to get one. Before the ban, demand for these items was low as was supply. The ban created a massive demand and a massive supply, and essentially proved the tinfoil hat people right.

Before the 1994 ban 'assault weapons' (as defined by the ban) were almost never used in crime - the most popular weapon used to shoot a human was the .22 cal rifle - never banned.

Guns exist, they are out there, and a ban won't erase them.
