I was re-watching the game tonight. In the 4th quarter with 8:13 left, the Hawks are facing a 3rd and 5 at the Patriots 12 yard line.

Bevell calls a WR screen to Tate. As we've all mentioned, we hate WR screens in this offense. They never seem to work and we call them way too often. Almost as despised as the fades in the endzone.

The play is stuffed for only a 2 yard gain. Leaving the team in a 4th and 3 situation.

The camera then pans to Pete who is visibility angry on the sideline. He walks past Darrell Bevell, looks at him in disgust and says, "Dumb".

He then continues walking forward and drops another visible, .

I thought this was an interesting exchange. I know Pete publicly called our Bevell's playcalling as a reason we won this game, but I can't help but wonder if the front-office is also questioning some of his play calls like we have been.

Wish I could upload the video to Youtube.

On Sunday, I thought he said "Damn!"

I mean it was 4th and 3. We had to go for it. So he was obviously put in a tough spot. I've been tough on Bevell, but I think you may be reaching here. No offense, of course.

I could be reaching. No offense taken at all. It looked like he said dumb. Never thought of "damn".

Well, Damn makes your lips part wider, exposes the teeth, wider space. Dumb doesn't do that. The lips almost go outward. Say the two words yourself and see. then go back and see what Pete's teeth are doing. Is it a hard Damn, coming apart, or a soft dumb, with lips going out?

I thought he was pissed because of the piss-poor blocking on that play. I think it would have been a TD if blocks would have been held. IIRC, Obomanu absolutely blew his block, it was sad.

Ok. I just watched it again. He most certainly calls Bevell (or his playcalling) dumb right to his face. He doesn't say "Damn".

I just don't see it. I just rewatched it as well. Even if he DID say dumb, that in no way means he is saying it was a dumb play call. You Bevell hater's gotta cool it. That play call wasn't terrible, if Oba pushes his block back instead of losing it that doesn't happen and we get the 1st or at least a reasonable 4th and 1. It's all about execution.

For instance that 4th and 3 play afterwords for the TD to Braylon wasn't designed for Braylon to get passed to there. It was intended to clear the left side out for Tate, and if RW waits a split second longer he gets wide open. Of course we all know what happens, we score a TD on RW's throw, but that is not nearly as high percentage as what would have gone to Tate had RW made the right throw.

If RW misses that throw to Braylon ppl are on this forum saying how stupid that was and it's all Bevell's fault when in fact RW made the incorrect throw (even though it worked)

This isn't a hate on RW, it's just another example of how easily things can be misconstrued.

If you're going to hate on Bevell at least have some solidity to the claim, show an example of why.

Damn, Dumb, Dang , or Darn. Whatever the word there is no way to tell that he is saying that about the actual call by Bevell.

I don't hate Bevell. I'm lukewarm on him at the moment. Was just an observation. I still feel like he mouthed, "Dumb", but I agree with your post. Just passing along my observations.

The way I see it, most of Bevell's playcalling is average to decent. I'd say 70% of it. However, the remaining 30% is divided into two groups; great play calls, and horrible play calls, and it's like a 22-8 split in favor of the horrible. I hope we replace him or he is forced to change from Carroll this next off-season.

Whether he said 'dumb' or 'damn', regardless, it could have been for any number of things besides the play call of Bevell's.

Can you take some examples? I keep hearing it but have yet to see a disected play that proved it.

I don't see Pete changing Bevell at all. Foolish to change OC's after one year for a rookie QB.... then all you have is Sam Bradford part deux. No thanks.

I'm not real big on Bevell, never have been but this is pretty out there man. Like other's have said, even if he did say 'dumb', he could have been refering to a number of other things. I find it hard to believe that PC doesn't like this play at any time though because of the way he always rants about how big a playmaker Tate is. I wouldn't even be surprised if it's one of Pete's personal input's on the playcalling.

I've defended Bevell plenty of times and will probably defend him more in the future, but that 3rd and 5 play call was retarded, with apologies to retarded people for being compared to that decision.

Well, assuming that he said dumb and was angry, then we don't know what he's referring to as dumb. Bevell's playcalling? Wilson's play? Tate's routerunning? Did Wilson audible that screen? The play itself was horrible and Pete walks right past Bevell before saying it, so in all likelihood he was talking about the play call. But that doesn't mean he was. If more cracks begin to show between Pete and Bevell then we'll have a good indication that Pete's fed up with Bevell's playcalling. Until then, it's all conjecture at this point.

This whole conversation is silly. At the end of the game he praised the coaches and Bevell in particular. I saw that same thing on the replay and I didn't see Bevell even in the picture, I took it to mean he was upset with the outcome of the play. That's my opinion.

I think poeple need to lay off the playcalling. Even the best playcalling means nothing if the execution sucks. Most were happy with the Edwards TD only because it worked out. It's easy to say that was a "dumb" playcall because it didn't work. if it did we'd all be like wow great call.

execution is more important than playcalling. The coaches are using much more sophistication in making there decisions than most realize. They know the tendencies of the defense in any given situation and have a number of plays to choose to exploit such tendencies.

Frankly I think the playcalling the last 2 games have been terrific. We haven't always executed properly- See Miller's Fumble, Lynch getting shut down on the 3rd and 1 on the 1st drive (McQuistan didn't try to block Spikes).

Dumb? Damn? Doesn't matter to me- it's emotional during the game and neither need to be dissected as to why it was said.

Every play is designed for certain situations and are molded into the specific game plan each week. That 11x17 sheet with all of the plays and situations...that thing changes every week. The plays don't change, but the situations the plays need to be used for DO change. PC and Bevell design that sheet each week specific for the team we play. We all know that.

The play call there was the mastermind of a week's worth of designing the game plan. That play call was in the "3rd and middle in the RZ" section of the game plan. Guaranteed. If Obo holds onto that block for one more second, Tate has two options there that both get him the 5-6 yds he needed to get. If Obo hooks his guy a little, Tate can go to the sideline and score. At some point, we'll run this play with Tate, we'll execute it, and he'll run it for 15 yds and a TD.

Regardless of what PC said, that play call was dumb. WR screens and fades are so rarely effective for this team...I wish they would be retired for a while.

People are reading way, way too much into this.

Are we really to the point where we are trying to lip read Pete's reaction to a single play to justify our dissatisfaction with the playcalling in general?

Just a reminder, we beat the Patriots.
Just another reminder, we beat the Patriots by passing down the field and using Russell Wilson's scrambling ability by design.

Regardless, I'd love if Bevell stops calling those bubble screens - especially to Tate. It's sniffed out every time and he tries it every game. At least change up the formation a bit and try to be deceptive.

They ran a slip screen out of a bunch formation (I believe last season) that worked really well.

I was listening to Brock & Salk today. They had Jaws on today and he was actually praising Darl Bevell's play calling. Saying he was doing a great job simplifying the playbook and utilizing RW's skill set. Just some food for thought.

2 truth's in the NFL. Most loved player is usually the backup Qb. Most hated coach is usually the OC.

We are doubly blessed. Read the gameday forum and BOTH Bradley and Bevel suck!

I heard that today too and thought of this thread. Bevell gets a lot of flak. Jaws made a good point, most OC's do. I know I'm guilty of getting mad at him. heck, I can't think of a single OC I haven't wanted to throw a brick at one time or the other. I can't recall a single person on .net who hasn't at one time or another railed at an OC.

I will just say when you use one play enough everyone will key on it and it fools nobody, if your going to screen that side better to run the formation and bait the defense then dump to the back when everyone is wide for a screen outside the TE slot to a back or even have the TE float out there and dump it to him. This will stop the defense from sprinting wide as soon as they see the formation shift.

If it's the same play I am thinking of, maybe he was saying it was "dumb" that RW threw the ball there. The Pats had the play blown up, and when your screen is compromised, you throw the ball away, you don't just throw it anyways and either risk a pick or getting your guy killed.

I actually liked the play calling the last 2 games, and I think it could get even better as they install more of the offense. The Sidney Rice pass was a great wrinkle.

Sure, there's a few bad play calls, but we were all over Holmgren for this, and a lot more often. In fact, name a coach that all of us internet geniuses haven't castigated at one point or another for a poor play call.
