  • I'm watching the Power of Tanzania stay in the top five for births. Relax, Tanzania.

  • That is strangely hypnotizing. It's difficult to wrap your mind around births happening every second just because 7 billion is so hard to visualize. Great stuff.

  • Births are winning!

But are they factoring in abortions in the deaths? Prolly not.

Noticed how dramatically that was true. 2-1 births while I was watching. Yay. More people. And they're not even 'Mericans.

  • Would it be wrong of me to be annoyed with this site? I hate planet overpopulation, and this didn't thrill me at all. We're like a virus, just like Agent Smith said in the Matrix. I think 1 Billion, not 7 billion would be much, much better for everyone and everything.

  • I guess we can view war as "population control"?
I hate both overpopulation and war. Wonder when the tipping point will be.

  • Earth's land mass is somewhere around (57,505,693.767 sq mi). That is roughly 8 square miles per person on this planet. Plenty of room.

You missed the decimal point. It's more like .008 sq miles per person. And you also don't factor in habitable land area, which is around 43%. That leaves more like .0035 sq miles per person.

Finally, if you factor in area needed for agriculture and forests, it's even less land per person.

  • There are many overpopulated urban areas but the earth itself is far from overpopulated. We just need to be better.

  • You guys who talk about population control obviously assume that you won't be part of the 'controlled'.

    Why?

I was waiting for that one. It always comes up in these discussions. All of us have already been born. What are we supposed to do? Off ourselves? If I had never been born, I seriously doubt I would have cared much. Plus offing ourselves would account for 1 in 7 billion. Statistically insignificant. The solution is to let less sperm cells reach their destination, worldwide. Therein lies the problem looking for a solution. But I guess eventual lack of food supply will eventually limit things to a maximum number of humans, but not before we consume every resource on the planet. Man, right now is a really good time to be alive! Good luck future generations! :34853_doh:

Actually, I live in the sparsely populated sticks on the outskirts of Arlington, WA. But every time I try to travel through Seattle on I-5 to simply get to Tacoma, these thoughts enter my head...

These are estimates not real time data. Only the NSA has that.
