Here are some more examples of our stellar educational system:

CBS: "80% of recent NY graduates can't read." Whoever wrote/proofed the article left 7 spelling/grammatical errors. http://cbsloc.al/XtvPkL

Looks like some of the errors from that last article have been corrected, but last I looked they still missed a bunch.

Sounds like we're focusing on completely the wrong things in school now. The "three r's?" Fuck that noise! Who needs 'em. Teachers need to fokus on are needs and mind there own busyness.

I was suspended a day in school in 5th grade because I brought a broken squirt gun to school and it was laying on my desk (with a few other things because we were having a class marketplace).

It didn't even have a trigger, it was green and see-through. I got suspended. For a day. HA.

Obviously a quality class, one that helps our young people gain the skills necessary for getting a job and functioning in society.

I'm torn, I read this with a raised brow; there MUST be more to the story! On the otherhand, it is Florida...

I got suspended in 5th grade when we had a "class market" and I was selling a neon green, see-through squirt gun without a trigger or water laying on my desk.

I also didn't go to the press with it.

This was the assignment - FROM FOX NEWS -

Quote:
“Have the students write the name JESUS in big letters on a piece of paper Ask the students to stand up and put the paper on the floor in front of them with the name facing up. Ask the students to think about it for a moment. After a brief period of silence instruct them to step on the paper. Most will hesitate. Ask why they can’t step on the paper. Discuss the importance of symbols in culture.”

The lesson was discussing symbols, like the power a piece of paper has over your decision making. The kid that ratted the teacher out is a total punkass bitch.

"Ask why they can't step on the paper" is far different from "You won't step on the paper so you fail."

Here's a similar assignment: change your avatar to a swastika for a month. It's just a picture, after all.

Fair assignment? One that you might hesitate to do? One you'd perhaps refuse to do? But yet, one that might easily show the importance of symbols in culture, no? It doesn't take a lot to see the importance of symbols in culture, even without crazy stupid assignments. And none of these "assignments" do much of anything to educate our young ones to survive and thrive in society, except maybe to show them there are idiots and assholes everywhere, even in positions of authority.

Look, maybe the teacher is a jerk but so is the kid for taking this so far. Talk about a lesson about symbols in culture, a second hand story about a kid stepping on a piece of paper is national news. Holy shit, we are a stupid country!

Do we have any confirmation that the kid was actually suspended for this? That doesn't seem to make any sense.

If indeed this was a pass/fail based on his refusal to step on a symbol of his faith, or if he was told not to come back to class because of that refusal, then yes, not only does he have the constitution on his side, but it should have some light shed on it to prevent further such idiocies from happening.

Oh, and the link provided video from CBS, not FOX. That shouldn't make a difference, but obviously matters to some folks here.

Edit: I wonder if those same people frowning on this guy for standing up for his beliefs would feel the same way if the assignment had been to stomp on the Kuran, or perhaps a picture of President Obama.

And it seems to me, the only one who passed a "critical thinking" class was the one who stood out from the crowd and didn't just mutely do what he was told by authority.

Would be interesting to see if he was suspended for not stepping on the paper or for a classroom outburst?

If suspended for not stepping on the paper - that is a problem. If he had a classroom outburst - which I could see not including that in the story - then, depending on the severity, could lead to suspension.
